Why do people tend to hurt the one they love the most?

The more invested and intimate the relationship, the higher our expectations tend to be, as we feel their actions reflect on us. If someone on the other side of the world does a disgusting thing, it doesn't greatly impact us. If that person lives a block away from you, it will impact you more. If it is your next door neighbor, the impact will be even greater. If it is a loved one or family member, we'll be impacted the most.

Love and hate are not opposites. The opposite of love is apathy or indifference... strong feelings and no feelings. When we say hate, we're saying because we care about this person, we have expectations of that person. Our expectations haven't been met, so we project that disappointment out as hatred.

Since the ones we love can disappoint us the most, we often attempt to get them back on track by punishing them for their choices. That's not actually going to motivate long-term change, but it's a common behavioral pattern. Therefore, we tend to hurt most the ones we love the most.

I honestly don't think they do it on purpose at least not most people. Just sometimes people lose sight of what important due to all of the outside interference
