Is the silent treatment abusive? Is it professional? In a sense, would you go silent on a client?

It's a way some people have of expressing their displeasure with something but are too timid to confront it directly. I think that's why it is more often women who do this in a relationship than men. They are more sensitive and afraid of facing it head on.

Silent treatment in a professional relationship? I would say no, that is never appropriate. But if you are asking whether or not there are times when saying nothing is the best approach, I think the answer is yes. But using the silent treatment as a means of expressing displeasure, no, I do not think that is a good practice for a professional relationship.

I would wonder why one gives the silent treatment this one girl was trying to piss me off, and I gave her the silent treatment trust me I really at one time cared for the girl but over years we lost contact, and before she left we were on good terms, but I feel bad to this day that I gave her the silent treatment and I have matured mentally over the years to never do this thing again. Yes, it is abusive.

I think it depends on how long are you going to stay silent. Sometimes after a heated argument you just want to avoid saying something that you might regret later on. Giving each other space to cool down works great so you can think rationally before you decide to talk to your partner about it. Going silent for unlimited time is toxic and a form of narcissism.

Yes it is. It’s a sign that a person shuts down when they feel negative emotions instead of practicing how to communicate their negative emotions towards something properly and it’s a form of punishment. If you are the kind of person to punish people when they make you upset, you are toxic

Yeah it is abusive tactic mainly used by narcissists. I have one coworker that went silent on me because i did not agree with her. And then sometimes she starts talking at random times and everyone around is like - what happened why did she start talking out of nowhere - and im like 🤷

My point is this, if someone does that, then cut her/his narcissistic ass out of your life. If that is client that obviously it is more complicated.

No it's not. Sometimes people go silent because they know if they say something it will just make things worse. Sometimes people go silent because they are completely done with the person.

It's extremely abusive. You're shutting down communication with the person and forcing them to "figure it out" on their own, instead of just telling them what's bothering you.
