If you "give your heart" to someone and they stomp on it - inconsiderate, etc. - but say they weren't in "right mind" do you give 2nd chance or no?

I was dating this guy last year and he was having some serious issues with work & family. Anyway he was inconsiderate, didn't communicate properly, etc. I truly did "give heart" as I went above and beyond trying to help him, be understanding, etc.

He reached out recently, blamed outside factors for his behavior, and I decided to try again. But I find he's just as he was - if not worse - and I'm thinking I made a huge mistake accepting him back as a friend getting to know again.

I don’t blame you for giving him that 2nd chance, because I think otherwise you would’ve always wondered “what if”. Now you have your answer and hopefully you learned from it and won’t repeat the mistake. I don’t know if you’re implying that you’re trying to start a friendship with him again but if so I’d advise against it. You still haven’t even recovered from the last times he hurt you, why put yourself in a place to deal with him again so personally? You should protect your heart and not give him another chance to hurt you, because you’ve already gone down this road and know the result.
