It’s actually pretty simple but super powerful: “Communication is key, but understanding is the door.” Let me unpack that a bit for you.

So, you hear all the time that you should communicate in a relationship, right? That’s like Relationship Advice 101. But this piece of wisdom took it a step further. It’s not just about talking and getting your point across. It’s about really trying to understand where the other person is coming from.

Picture this: You’re having a disagreement. The easy part is expressing your own feelings, but the real game-changer is when you step back and try to see things from your partner’s perspective. It’s like putting on their shoes and walking a mile. This doesn’t mean you always have to agree with them, but understanding their viewpoint can change the whole dynamic.

This advice also means listening – and I mean really listening, not just waiting for your turn to speak. It’s about hearing not just the words, but the emotions and intentions behind them. It's like tuning into a radio frequency; the clearer the reception, the better the music sounds.

And here's the kicker – understanding goes both ways. It’s also about helping your partner understand you. This might mean being more open about your feelings, your fears, and your dreams. It’s like giving them a map to your inner world.

So, yeah, that’s the best piece of relationship advice I’ve gotten. Simple on the surface, but it goes deep!

"Marriage is a wonderful institution, as long as you don't mind being in an institution!"

From my aunt, and she was married once and had been in an institutin. I will add to it.

"If you are checking into an institution, make sure you like the rules and the company of fellows... otherwise you will be seen running out the window yelling crazy stuff".

People say that love will keep you in an instution and I'll suggest, you really want to "like" it there instead, then you can love what you have accepting the good and the bad.

Consider how your choices impact others rather than treat them as entitlements. Before saying or doing anything, ask yourself if you'd appreciate (not just tolerate) being on the receiving end of what you plan on dishing out. If not, come up with another alternative.

Talk to each other and if you want something talk so the partner wants to listen. Direct accusations "I want" "you should" often leads to the other not wanting to listen anymore.

A close second one: Never go to bed after a fight without at least saying good night!!! Yes you can fight thats normal and sometimes its not over on the same day, especially if the fight happened in the evening. If you can't even say an honest good night to your partner there is something wrong even beyond that single fight. Cooldown for a few minutes and if you want to go to sleep at least dont do it with the last word being words of a fight.

I think the last one is even more important for me but fights are much rarer than just something concerning a talk serious talk about whatever it can be.

This is not unique information but I was told that relationships involve prioritizing your partner and if you don't make them a priority, things fall apart. I know married couples that prioritized chores and child care over the happiness and love they owed their partner and they ended up divorced. I know people who prioritized rest over helping their partner do house chores and they ended up divorced. I know people who prioritized money over their partner and ended up divorced. I know people who prioritized vanity and pride over their inclusion and participation of their partner in their lives and they end up divorced.

The best advice I ever got about marriage was “You get to be right or happy, not both. Chose your battles.”

The concept is don’t fight about every little thing. Learn to just let the small stuff go and chose happy over ego. It’s been worth it.

DON'T take advice from strangers on the internet. The reason advice is free is that it is worthless.
