Men, would you stop working or cut out the hours if your wife earned enough to provide for the family? How would you share the housework?

Question

If you wife or long term girlfriend with whom you intend to build a life earned more than you, enough to provide for you and your hypothetical future kids, would you choose to work part time or none at all to look after the house and your family? Did you see it happen around you? How likely is it to happen where you are currently living? Please do share your thoughts. (I'm living in Paris and I know 3 men in this situation. I've met some that wished that option was available so that they would have more time for themselves and their family. But given the size of the sample I wouldn't make  statistics.)

Well , firstly great question that deserves its status.

I'd have no problem in participating in housework , but I always would do that anyhow , as I like things a particular way. Now , probably you have to take my age into account , but she is making more than me ( awesome , I'd love that big time ) , I wouldn't quit as such , but I'd use this income to really pursue some passions , some of these passions would be financial , now with the kind of income we are talking and we are living here in Thailand , we'd have a pretty incredible " pool villa " house , so we'd need a cleaner anyhow , if there were young children. I'd love to integrate that part of it , I think I'd be a great father this time around , I'd try to do some real community based projects too , making it clear that my wife/ partners income is a big part of this.

I see some arrogant people in this situation here , I'd be conscious of attitude , because I could enhance my investment business , and make some great passive income ( which I do already ) , and I believe in Karma , so the more money " we " can make , while having great lives ourselves , the more other people we can assist , and there are so many here who just do not have that opportunity.

I lived overseas and as with other cultures they think differently. While there I adopted a different stance than most americans. When I lived with the girlfriend, if she made enough money to cover all the expenses and was OK with it, I became Mr. Cook and Clean, at the same time I volunteered my time in civic matters to learn the language and culture. I'm now 62 YOA. Let us say for the sake of argument that she made enough such that we could afford a comfortable lifestyle, take vacations, etc. I would gladly clean, cook and resume volunteering in some small capacity to keep me engaged outside the home. Kids are not a priority like they once were. I foud out that I am quite good at domestic undertakings. She decorates, I tiddy up, cook, clean and am there for HER when she gets home from a long day. I agree with 'anonymous' and that was me 40 years ago, but my soul has changed in the interim. Now happiness, one of the hardest states of being to find; and maintain- are my priorities.

I know of no person earning enough to finance an entire family.

I have seen somewhere (forgotten which link it was) that only 10% of full time employees make 100K annually and even just having 100K AFTER tax is not that much either.

According to the Bugatti man Andrew Tate in 2023 having 25 million dollars at your disposal there is nothing to buy.

In short - won't happen. I aim to generate wealth myself. At least until I get to experience what Andrew Tate has experienced when he said what he said.

Rule of thumb - if you have to ask "how much" if it's not real estate or property, entire businesses or supercars like Ferraris, then you ain't rich.

I would not stop working. I'll explain something that many women don't seem to understand about men. We are wired to do things, build things and provide for the ones we love. We don't respect ourselves when we don't do those things, and a woman doesn't respect a man who doesn't respect himself. It's the downfall of many relationships.

It's the rare man who can maintain his dignity while not being productive and serving his purpose.

As a woman, if a man wants you to be the provider and him be the homemaker or "follow his passion", you should turn and run the other way, because you're not doing him or yourself any favors.

No. Because it makes no difference how much or little a woman makes, because women simply don't pay for things like men do. Yes, you can point to very rare exceptions, but in those cases, the woman certainly doesn't respect the man.

There are many differences between men and women that will never change, which is why absolute equality isn't a realistic or sensible goal.

I'd keep working full time. Bills split 50/50, and housework is split 50/50 for shared things, and for self made messes we would each just clean up after ourselves.

I'd drop my hours, not sure bout stopping all together. I already compress to a 4 day week, I'd drop hours to a 3 day week or shorten hours in line with school day. I might take an18month career break till youngest starts school

I would be willing to stop working and stay home and do all the house work and the cooking, if that is what she wished. I am seeking a FLR where I would be a stay at home house husband. I would even take her last name in marriage.
