It's common for people to rewrite reality when they're not seeing what they want to see. It's their way to legitimize whatever decisions they make. Tearing down means eliminating whatever norms, rules or guidelines that they perceive as holding them back from whatever they want. It's what people used to legitimize slavery. They claimed the slaves weren't real people. By promoting something long enough, it becomes an accepted belief by others. If you keep hearing that all guys cheat, you'll assume any guy you might be with will automatically cheat on you, and that might lead you to set up a self-fulfilling prophecy and make it happen.

We all need to believe we can win, at least some of the time. That's the reason kids will change the rules when they play games with adults... as they want to level the playing field and believe they have a chance of winning. Schizophrenia is the same. For schizophrenia to exist, there must be a genetic predisposition and a history of schizophrenic communication. Schizophrenic communication is a series of no-win situations. Let's say your mom buys you 2 shirts and tells you to try them on. You come out with one shirt on, and she says "You didn't like the other one?" No matter what you did, you couldn't win. Schizophrenics will rewrite reality in order to believe they can win, at least on occasion.

To a point, yeah. People are surprisingly tolerant if they get their bread and circuses, but biology has limits that won't be denied.
