I'm sure there are many instances where this is true. Another factor which plays into it is the type of relationship and man has with a female. If they are married and she is a mother to their kids, I think that will be a big factor for men who hold their own mothers high on a pedestal. I know there have been times when I was short fused with my mom, but those times have been long ago and the past. I live my wife, and only get to see my mom a few times a year when we visit my parents.
that being said, I'm probably a little more impatient with my wife than I would be my mother.

True. My "bestie" who's 16 years younger... I met when he was 16. We've only been friends, nothing else, and I told him "I'm not going to be your girlfriend, your sister, or your mom, but I'll be your friend."

He grew up with his dad, as his mother was absent (institutionalized). But his father is an outstanding example of manhood (educated, polite, well-spoken, respectful) and did a great job of raising this guy. So I was happy to be his friend, and we've been friends ever since. Now, I've not been girlfriend/mom/sister, but I helped him figure his shit out in college, I taught him to drive, I've given him advice when he'd ask for it, we'd hang out and talk frankly about a lot of stuff. He jokingly calls me his "life coach."

Now 16 years later, he's married to a very nice woman who, let's face it, is me. Lol. So, there may be something in the theory of "significant female influences" too.

Not true. I had a friend who was great to his mom and treated most girls like shit. He must have fucked every damned skeezer in our neighborhood and then some. He wasn't that great of a person in his younger years and took advantage of a lot of people's stupidity. He ended up blowing his brains out about 10 years back.

Which woman? His girlfriend, the women he finds attractive or all women? Most guys are great to their mother and women they find attractive, but will be rude to women they find unattractive or ignore them (if you ask them for directions or information about something). The best index to a person's character is how he treats less fortunate people, who can't do him any good. A truly kind and empathetic person will be nice to everyone regardless of their looks, ethnicity, socioeconomic class etc... (Which is rare to find unfortunately).
