If that were true we would not have dog shelters, battered women shelters, orphanages, abortion, etc.

There is some truth in it. It speaks to the different things society / people value in men versus women. Women are born with the things they are valued for, whereas men have to earn those things becaus men are valued for the utility they provide. It's not the politically correct thing for women to acknowledge that fact, and many women won't even admit it to themselves, but deep down we all know it's true.

I'd love to say it isn't true, but it is. If a man can't do anything, no one will respect or put up with them, not even himself. It's so engrained into humanity that if a man feels like he's not useful, he will become depressed, or at the very least upset. We need a purpose, something to do, even if only a small one.
