I had one commissioned for me and my wife.
First we had a professional photographer take several shots of us - one of me sitting and her standing up, and viceversa - and with different clothing and dresses.
We picked the one we liked the most and commissioned an artist to use it as a base for the painting. My wife thought it was a bit gaudy but went along with my idea because she was touched I wanted to immortalize us like that.

I randomly thought of he and I in a more intimate way but I couldn’t allow any stranger to paint he or I in that way either. I figure the style you and your wife chose is more classy and nice to share with others. It’s a memory encased in time.

I think a photograph would be better for him and I because I’d want to see him a lot clearer, unless the painter could do realistic portraits with fine details. Would it be worth the price? It’d be debatable.
I think overall this is a nice concept as compared to a couple getting matching tattoos or each others name/ face tatted on their skin. I think this painting leaves the art as art and the people as people, and just has that level of class to it as well.

Although I thought it slightly odd the asker didn’t show the painting of him and his boo. :\ privacy sake I guess, but this was such a wholesome question. I mean more intimate than most, so I figured the drop would be photographic. Like family album type of stuff.

I wouldn't want to look at it on the wall, so no I wouldn't get a painting with my husband.
My wife does those fairly regularly for people. She does a sit down figuring out details comes up with a rough idea meets again if they like it she paints it. Cost is generally $3-10k can be higher or lower based on complexity. With it though painting is not done until you the customer are completely satisfied

Oh, thanks very much to both! 😅 It's been a while since I painted and unfortunately I didn't take photos of my paintings before I threw them away when I moved. I have some digital ones I kept from Oekaki applets like this. I'm very impatient so I use a scribbly style and just rely on the viewer's eyes to infer textures and blend colors:

@TommyMountainFigure Yes, as with the case of many post-impressionists. Another example is pointilism:
Although their motivations were typically different from mine. A lot of these eye blending techniques were done with the focus of creating more vibrant colors since mixing pigment results in subtractive blending while the eyes blend light in an additive way.
Old school pixel art also used dithering in this way:
Although the main reason it was done in the dithering case was because graphics hardware was limited to very few colors back then.
My rationale is purely laziness. 😅 I just find it's way faster to scribble than to start tediously blending strokes. I can just keep my hand moving very rapidly all over the place and let the eyes do the work. With animals it's especially easy since the scribbles kind of have a textural effect of suggesting things like fur.

@TommyMountainFigure Thank you very much, yay! 🤝 I'm really a huge fan though of artists who can render the most subtle transitions in value and accurately depict the most elaborate textures, like Frazetta here with his graphite drawing:
I lack both the skill and patience to render like that. I got into drawing a lot as a kid mainly because I wanted to design and program video games. So I ended up trying to teach myself how to draw, including pixel art, primarily in that context.
Yet making all the artwork for a video game tends to be a full-time job and I was juggling all the drawing with design, programming, music, testing, interacting with users and going through user feedback, etc. So I had to find ways to just crank out as much art as I could in the shortest time possible, and so I favored the most economical styles that would get the basic idea across without having to spend much time on a piece.
A lot of my inspirations at the time became comic book illustrators with an extremely economical style, like Frank Miller in Sin City:
His artwork is so stylish and dramatic but is so simplistic and economical at the same time, so barebones and devoid of all but the essential details. So it's well-suited for someone who wants to crank out comic book panel after panel without spending whole days just working on one. I liked that and tried to learn as much as possible to produce quantity over quality that way, but still deeply admire artists who take the time to fully render a piece in magnificent detail.
Your enthusiasm for quality artwork is really infections. I was heavily into comic books as a kid and still have a lot of them stored away actually. Like you, I was fascinated by how a simple piece of paper with few words could tell an entire story merely by, I hesitate to call it simple artwork when even though it was drawn quickly? It encouraged the reader to use his or her imagination to piece it all together! Talking to you on here has brought it all back.
@TommyMountainFigure I think so too and there's a great skill Miller had in reducing everything down to the bare minimum. Also just epic contrast and maximum dramatic impact in almost every panel:
Economy was my main focus then just out of desperate practicality, but there is a beauty in reducing things down to the most barebones of essentials, and it also maximizes focus on those essentials and tells us a lot about what the artist considers most vitally important to telling the story.
There's also this folk tale I read once about a Chinese artist. A renowned Chinese artist was commissioned once to draw an emperor's portrait. The artist agreed and asked for time to work on it.
A week passed and the emperor sent his messenger to inquire about the painting. The artist asked for more time. This went on repeatedly for months.
Finally the emperor lost his patience and demanded he see the painting. The artist showed up to court and, swiftly in front of him, painted his portrait deftly with the bare minimum of brush strokes. The emperor was outraged and drew his sword and beheaded the artist on the spot.
As the emperor's guards searched and ransacked the artist's home, they found painting after painting after painting of the emperor's face in his home.
Yikes. The moral of that story clearly doesn't do justice to the 'pen is mightier than the sword' argument!!!
With Miller, his focus is almost entirely on foreground elements. He almost never renders any background except subtle hints of it at best. His figures also often tend to be bathed in shadow, light, or weather effects like rain, which often means even most of the foreground elements are also receding into a negative void of a background.
It must be great to have a style that is instantly recognisable. For me, I just never managed to reproduce what I see onto paper!

I often think it's just about repeating the same design language over and over. For example, an artist who draws with nothing but straight lines, no curves, will already start to develop a consistency to her design language that will echo in all of her works that will at least make it so she will be one of the suspects of who drew it in each of her work. If she layers another consistent design language on top of it, she'll narrow the suspects down exponentially. Just a few layers like this and all of her work will be instantly recognizable as hers.

That's a problem all artists have to my knowledge. They can never draw things exactly as they imagined it. I've found even professional musicians have the same problem where they can never record a song quite the way they heard it in their imagination if it's more than a melody or simple chord progression. It's a constant state of compromising and can be perpetually disappointing, especially for those most ambitious to capture what they envisioned.
Ahh well at least I'm not alone in being unable to paint/ draw what I see. The problem is, when I've finished? even I can't tell what it was meant to be.
@TommyMountainFigure I struggle with that a lot as well. My natural tendency is to overwork things. So the main way I resisted is to just set times for myself. Like that Oekaki sketch of the dog above was completed in under 20 mins, the man sketch in under 10 mins. I usually aim for something like a few minutes to an hour for myself depending on what I'm doing. It's pretty tight but it aligned with my goals of churning things out as fast as I can, prioritizing quantity over quality.
@TommyMountainFigure Also if we're aiming to communicate something more than just an aesthetic and aiming for some degree of economy/minimalism, I think a question to ask is not so much like, "Does this look good?" or "Does this fit the image I envisioned?" but more like, "Does this communicate the idea I want to communicate?" Because especially if we're focused on illustration, definitely bonus points if the illustration is really pleasing to look at but the most important thing is that it clearly communicates an idea. We're visual communicators in the contexts of multimedia like comic book illustrations which convey visual and verbal media, or video games which combine visuals with sound, music, text, voice, etc. In that case the priority is for the visuals to communicate an idea that fits.

The artists creating what they envisioned, the Chinese story, and your mentioning quality over quality made me think
First for the case of the emperor and working with deadlines or so in painting, it is good to be and at least know how to/ have the ability to be swift. Balancing both seems helpful.
Communicating the message if there is one is MOST important so many struggle to achieve exactly as they envisioned.
Like we are all gods and dealing with human mortality we cannot exactly transition something from abstract and psyche to this tangible world. Sometimes we lack perfection or understanding. The tools to make it exactly as thought up by ourselves.
BUT
what was really striking to me was the artist asking “did I communicate my message” instead of “does this look good?”
If you actually time or have a pace for yourself and think of the message you can get that out without wasting much time.
What I’m saying is I never THOUGHT artists- some person such as that would actually try to bring 100% purpose or direction to their work their part of life their corner of the world!
I mean to actually think of the time it takes and try to make that efficient while remaining impactful and also being what they desired visually to come to be?
I don’t know something about it baffles me and seems unworldly.
It’s like a businesslike approach and humanistic approach.

My English teacher loved to read
He did the math and said he wouldn’t be able to read all the books ever written and it saddened him. Somewhat myself included but it mostly struck me.
Imagine a painter having a small version of this in their work or lifestyle? Like only being able to paint so much so wanting to be efficient with time or wanting to pain their legacy or construct their visual diary- this unfolding story, envelope, this folding origami in a matter of time?
I don’t know it’s something so bizarre to me.
Do they appreciate art on this level where they just want more time to do it or is that pessimistic and they just enjoy going as a free spirit and displaying their mind on canvas at marking the different times and mindsets of their life accordingly and where it’s appropriate/ well fitted?
I don’t know just something about skill and it could be beneficial to sketch or paint in a press for time in business matters
And one desiring to make use of the time and be intentional to produce what they truly desire while creating a space to have enough time to do it.
I feel so messy explaining this but my mind is just in awe.
Not only is it efficient, and admirable at times when thought of in that context but it shows a level of perfectionism is possible.
For you to create something so realistic in a short amount of time? Less time that it would take another artist to create the same or similar or paint the same muse/object/ reference?

@Rosexøxø Cheers! It's something I picked up from uni in a Graphics Design course. That was arguably one of the most useful visual arts courses for me since it's an area I neglected being primarily into illustration and fine arts.
Our professor was a very open-minded man to all sorts of individual styles each student uniquely possessed, but he emphasized above all else that the point of graphic design is clear visual communication of an idea.
So our assignments always consisted of trying to come up with a graphic design for a hypothetical advertisement, e. g., and while he graded us all sorts of elements like our understanding of composition and our ability to create a striking, attention-grabbing advertisement, above all else he graded us on whether our design clearly communicated the requested message of the assignment.
Graphic design often seeks to communicate as clearly as possible a very simple and unambiguous message, like "SAVE".

Unfortunately I don't know who come up with the floppy disk icon which is now ubiquitous for the message of a "SAVE" command, and it's a bit silly now since we haven't used floppy disks in ages, but it did do a good job during the time of floppy disks to communicate the idea of saving data to persistent memory (the most common back then being floppy disks since a lot of computers back then often even lacked hard disks).
@Rosexøxø That's the goal of all design as I see it now whether visual or musical or anything else is to communicate ideas. If we're emphasizing design, we're emphasizing communication.
A difference to me with fine arts vs. graphic design is that fine artists often seek to communicate a complex, highly subjective idea, whose interpretation might be uniquely different for each viewer. It seems analogical to the use of figurative language in creative writing. We often have to be imprecise to communicate very generalized truths which can apply differently to each individual. Still, the goal there too is communication, it seems.
On time constraints, I think that's a practical necessity anyone working under a deadline has to come to terms with at some point. I lack a very poetic or philosophical view of time in this context except the mere practical observation that we'll miss our deadlines if we spend too much time on anything. 😅

You make it sound so magnificent but I might disappoint you in that I just needed to crank out a lot of art for my games really fast since I wouldn't get anything done otherwise with all the coding to do, all the songs I had to make, all the sound effects, etc. 😅

@Rosexøxø I tried to do a similar thing musically. I'm especially lazy there and lacking any formal training in music theory (recently been trying to learn from books and YouTube) and mostly just dicked on my MIDI keyboard. Yet to try to avoid fooling around all day and crank out some songs, I tried to focus on the message I'm trying to communicate.
Like with this one, I wanted to communicate the feeling of being lost on a lonely night in a futuristic city rife with nightlife, red-light districts, pleasure domes, crime, and some underlying hope that ties all the lost souls there.

I'm not sure if I succeeded but I called it done when I felt like I got the message across. That one took me almost a full day. I'm very slow on the musical side but thankfully a video game doesn't need *that* many songs for a complete soundtrack compared to the number of sprites and tiles and so forth.
