You shouldn't ask loaded questions you might not want an answer to. I think thats his most probable point.

I think he's being honest with you, and I think that he's wise enough not to answer that question when he's irritated with you, as he knows he might say something he regrets right then.

What I'd suggest you do, is consider if you have been irritating. If you feel you haven't been take the time away to realise why your upset here and how to express it calmly and without malice to him later.

I think he sounds wise, I think maybe right now he would answer he doesn't want the relationship, but I also think the wisdom comes that he understands he's not thinking at all clearly when he's annoyed.

So, I would say, the meta answer here is, he doesn't want to lose the relationship idly which means he still cares, even if just at this moment he might say something he regretted if he answered honestly.

That's a difficult question. In general terms though, the longer you can give him without feeling uncomfortable the better. Remember, if your concerned that right now he might be thinking of doing something you might both regret, it is okay to just text once and let him know both your sorry and will wait for him (and if feelign insecure yourself, say something like, "I trust you'll come back to me").

So if your feeling that things are more or less okay, but its just a minor fight, just give it a few days, let him be the one getting back to you. Again, wait as long as your comfortable to wait and make sure you communicate any insecurity once and concisely, leaving it clear in the message your waiting on him out of love and respect for his need for space.
