Have you ever experienced a situation where you thought you were being honest, but it just came off as rude?

It happened to me a couple of times mainly because of my weird humour.

Bascially if we use the phrase "I'm just being honest...", we already messed up and are covering it up with false virtue ("I'm such an honest person, it just spills out to bless people" [eye roll ] ). It's best to immediately address the faux pas and say, "I'm sorry, I'd like to phrase that differently" or "I shouldn't have said that, it was thoughtless". If we have "weird humor", our friends likely know that and appreciate us anyway, quirks and all. If we are losing friends right and left over the "weird humor", it's time to reflect a bit on our social skills. People who view their lack of tact as a sign of strength or toughness are just defended against vulnerability and are afraid.

Yeah, it happens. You're sharing and suddenly something comes off as too much. It's ok... just backtrack and explain yourself. Ultimately the person knows you were just being honest and not intending to be rude.

Having said this, some folks are rude on purpose and sweep the poor tude under the rug as "being honest" ... but it's just rude.

Whether something is rude or not depends on intentions. Just because someone is offended doesn't make it rude. People that get offended like that are insecure. Imagine you saw an obese person getting in a situation where they would get stuck and you could prevent it by telling them they are too big and will get stuck. They could be offended that you pointed it out but it wasn't rude of you to say so.

@TheRealPepperPotts not really. Certain things have some gray other things don't. For example "the sky is blue" is a black and white issue as we know the chemical that causes the color. Ones perception does not change the fact that it is blue. A color blind person with blue blind might see a different color but it is still blue. When a couple fights over something it isn't necessarily black and white as both could be partial right, both could be wrong, 1 could be right and the other wrong or vica versa. Many of the questions on here can be summed up via fact usage. Other questions like cheating is different as each person views what qualifies as cheating differently. My view on it is black and white. Flirting, talking beyond purely professional, sexting, hugging, kissing, sex, physical touch beyond a handshake/high five. All would qualify as cheating for me and my wife. Yes I do know that because we did talk about it. But for others they have a looser view
