It's completely fine and normal. Some girls feel more uncomfortable about it, so they side hug, which is also fine. It's whatever they're comfortable with. A hug is just a greeting. I sometimes do it with friends, but for guys it's harder to get past the hug sometimes because we don't want to come across as even remotely gay, so we usually go in for a handshake and pull each other for a tap on the shoulder. That's me and my friends anyways.

There's no rule in the book for what to do, so just do whatever's comfortable socially to you.

Depends on if it's an old friend, and the hug itself. A quick hug from a friend they came across at event or something is fine.

If they are a good friend then not a problem whether it is a guy or a girl. Can't be two-faced about it as I would expect she would not get unruly if I was to hug one of my long lasting friends who is a girl.

There is a difference between a platonic hug and a romantic hug. Platonic especially brief warrented ones are fine. Romantic interest hugs obviously not.

A hug is dependent on intention. A hug from a female friend is only that. A hug from a female friend who has a crush on me and hugs me just a little too tight, long and maybe lets her hands wander ever so slightly is not okay.
