Boyfriend always smiling on his phone... Possibly cheating?

Hey everyone, so I've been dating my boyfriend for 2 years and recently we've been having a lot of fights - especially this time after he didn't set boundaries with his female best friend, long story short, they were spending a lot of time together behind my back, texting late nights after I was asleep. He assured me that he never did anything wrong as the best friend and him are not each other's types and I chose to believe him cause he's always been honest with me and I've also met this female best friend and she seemed nice. However, this has turned me into a very insecure person. Also, in short, after we almost broke up cause of this, he stopped talking to her.

And nowadays, I notice a lot, that he's either on his phone or his laptop and is always smiling, every single time I look at him. He doesn't try to defend himself ( maybe he's just tired of having to do it ) I try to reassure and convince myself that he's not doing anything wrong of texting other girls ( I also end up apologizing in the end for my behavior) but at this point, I don't know anymore... Please could you advise me? Is it possible that he is? Or am I only being extremely paranoid.

He tells me that he's speaking to his friends. But I don't know really. This has happened so much that it started bothering me 😢 so I asked him rather than later letting it create any problem.
But thing is, he sometimes tells me " yeah I'm just talking to my friend Adam etc" but other times he just stays silent.
