Why do some people not leave a relationship they clearly aren’t happy in?

Their partner tells them to leave , they tell them they are no longer in love with them , their partner no longer touches them or has sex with them , their partner disappears for days without telling them where they are going. Why won’t they leave? What is holding them on to not leave them?

I told my boyfriend to leave and I don't love him. He wouldn't go either. His reasons being that he had a roof over his head and could get away with blackmailing me and abusing me.

Other people's reasons are probably similar in terms of not wanting to give up the safety net of home and money. Fear of the unknown. Or just a nasty person who doesn't care that they are hurting you by refusing to go.

It could be because she's afraid of starting a new life without you, because she's gotten used to you, used to life with you, used to seeing you at home everyday, used to going to you to chat or for advice EVEN if you're treating her badly.

It's similar to why a person would try to keep their family as a part of their life even if the family members are abusive and treat them badly.

You've gotten used to them being around, talking to them, spending time with them, getting advice from them, introducing them to friends etc.

It feels scary not knowing what life would be like without the familiarity.

But, that doesn't mean it's impossible to be away from their ex.

If you're telling her it's over, you need to find a way to legally remove her from your home if she won't leave willingly, rather than just letting her continue to stay there and pay bills there.

it may just be easier to stay. you have to literally unwind your whole entire life depending on how long you've been with them, if you live with them, if you're married with them, if you have kids, assets, pets, liabilities, etc
