Is the progress of a relationship similar to the workplace?

In the workplace if the manager or supervisor reprimands you once in a while, you're just coming to work for the money but aren't enthusiastic about it, your boss never tells about other higher positions or you nearly got fired but was given a second chance... the chances of you ever getting promoted and working for the company as supervisor or manager one day is slim to nothing. You would have to be exemplary without any complaints ever.

Similar with relationships I guess. For instance if you've been in a relationship for 5 years but there has always been drama, trust issues, heated arguments where it even got physical, one was forgiven for cheating or it has ultimatums then it's unlikely they're going to have kids and get married. The dating period has to be free of negative obstacles in order to consider a lifetime commitment.
