What would you do if you found out that one of your parents is cheating?

I found out that my dad is cheating on my mom. They've been married for over 30 years. I don't know what to do. What would you do if you were in my position?

My father died in 2007 and my mother is 93 years old so that's not gonna happen to me.

Go to your father, tell him that you know about his infidelity, and explain that he has placed you in an extremely awkward position: though she will be devastated, you think your mother absolutely has the right to know about this, but you don't want to do anything that your father would interpret as you being disloyal to him. Explain that the only ways for this to be resolved are for him to confess to your mother, or for you to tell your mother, then ask which he would prefer. If he chooses to confess to your mom, tell him that you need for him to notify you after he has made his confession, because you will then talk to your mom to verify that your dad confessed.

The only reasonable thing to do and that is not to intervene in that situation.

Other than that, there is nothing else you should do and let him settle that situation with his wife. If you tell your mother directly, you will make things worse for both of your parents.

Your dad is the one that will eventually have to confess to your mom and accept the consequences.

If you speak to your dad and not to your mom, you are taking sides. If you talk to your mom without letting your dad know, then you are placing yourself in a tricky situation because you will also have to face the judgment of your dad.

What your dad did is obviously wrong but letting either parent know that you are aware is only going to exacerbate the situation.

It sting af. But it depends on how close you are with your parents… don’t intervene because it is between them… but if you are close and wanna know why. I think it’s okay to ask why and/or express how you feel in an emotionally mature way. Or no need to say anything and let yourself also heal because it’s hurtful and effects you too.

Been there done that. Well not exactly My mom cheated on my dad for three years. When I found out, she knew I knew, and she ask me to let her break it to Dad, which she did. I was glad I didn't have to grapple with that, but I'm still pissed off at her for wrecking our family.

I was in the same situation when it was revealed my mom was cheating on my dad. I had no clue how to respond. I was just dumbfounded. It didn't even register at first. It was kind of an "is this even real" type of feeling.

To be honest, there’s not much you can do. You absolutely have every right to be angry though. Hell I would be too. If anything, you can tell your dad you know what’s going on and support only your mom. Always be there for her.
