I don't like my boyfriend's family and I don't make a secret of it. He too his trying to minimize contact with them.

I am nice and civil to them but that's it. His mother and his sister hate each other, they always try to manipulate him to take sides. His mom only likes him over his sister because he does anything she wants. His sister only cares for him because she can get things from him. His dad lacks a spine and allows all this to happen.

I've seen friction with a parent (my wifes X and grandma) and it causes problems. It's hard to make work when there is "mental/emotional stuff" going on. The outside party lacks power to address the issues, the child generally does, so it creates "waves" and divisions. Someone strong that confronts the issues... probably gets called out as the "bad person".

It is important to have family and support at times. maybe can be managed, but requires effort... like managing employees. you'd have to be a strong team and maintain boundaries, communicate very well and protect yourselves and relationship emotionally.

I keep my mother-in-law at arm's lenght because she has this weird thing of wanting to compete with her daughter in everything, and for this makes her try to seduce every guy her daughter is with.

Well it depends on a number of things. Is this something you are considering as a long term relationship. If not, it doesn't really matter. If it is with that in mind, what are the reasons you feel they don't like you and how close is he to his family. Will you or are you living close to them or across the country. Are there any siblings that you feel like you can at least communicate with?

yes, some fmily dynamics are just horrible, but the kids turned out ok.
