In American culture is it acceptable to share a house/apartment with the opposite sex if in separate bedrooms and not having sex?

Do you see anything wrong with living under the same roof with someone you aren't married to and not having sex with and each of you sleep in your own bedroom?
In America
Someone who was very close to me thinks it's immortal for me to be sharing an apartment with a guy that's like a brother to me and making me feel like I'm a whore or something.
I am really upset over this because it's perfectly acceptable in America but not in his country. So now we are in another argument over the same thing we argued about before.
I mean, what does he want from me?
