I'm AFAB (28) with lifelong disphoria, and after taking birth control, I ruined my relationship, does anyone else understand?

Since childhood, I’ve always felt like I wanted to be a boy, but my sheltered upbringing limited my understanding of options. In my early 20s, I found a way to access testosterone (not through medical means) for almost two years. It helped immensely with my dysphoria, especially since I’ve had minimal hormonal changes and very light periods throughout my life.

In early 2024, after an assault, I started using Depo-Provera for safety, and later tried the pill while in a relationship. However, they didn't listen to me and gave me Norethindrone/ethinyl estradiol caused significant emotional and behavioral changes. I became overly emotional, crying during conversations even when I didn’t want to, and struggled with dysphoria, stress, and aggravated my PTSD and ADHD, which I usually manage well.

My partner (AMABnon-conforming) found this challenging. Though he suggested my behavior wasn’t entirely due to hormones, he likely wasn’t aware of my prior use of Depo before we got together thus I forgive this. Eventually, the stress on both our mental health led to the end of our romantic relationship. We remain friends and still live together, but it’s been hard seeing how much I love them, and no matter what he said, I feel at fault in an unfair way.

I’m currently exploring free healthcare options to access mood stabilizers and address these challenges. I’m also looking for support from others who’ve experienced or supported someone through similar struggles.

I’d like advice on how to effectively communicate with my ex about these issues, as we both still care deeply for each other. Ultimately, I want to find a way to feel more like myself again and better manage my emotions without alienating those around me.

Questions:

  • Has anyone else experienced or supported someone through similar hormonal and emotional challenges?
  • How can I approach a meaningful and empathetic conversation with my ex about these struggles while respecting his boundaries?
