Are moms that compete with their daughters pathetic?

I find it very sad & pathetic; my boyfriend's mom always had a weird rivalry with her daughter and always tries to one up her and my boyfriend says sometimes he thinks she even messed with her daughters boyfriends just to feel superior.

I have some sympathy for his sister but boyfriend doesn't really care, he says "like mother like daughter" and they are rotten people whom he detests. Funny he never tells them to their faces imho...
