That can happen if one is in the military and are away for long periods of time. This is one reason to not marry someone in the military. I'm thinking it would be worse if both were in the military. Maybe that is also why they have such a high incidence of divorces. I also don't think it would be appropriate to live together if they weren't married.

It could have meant one of two things when you said "Live together". One is with 2 people in different cities, states, or countries. The other is two people who live close together but don't want to be known for any impropriety. I went with the 2nd option. Neither is right or wrong but common sense is not applicable when you have several right/wrong options.

If they aren't married not weird, even if they are married there are situations where it's not weird not living together, like one of them had to move far away for their job or the marriage is on rocky ground and they need time apart till they work things out. I could understand not sleeping in the same bed, some people prefer sleeping in their own bed or some people move to much in their sleep or snore too loud making it difficult for their partner to sleep.
