My friend is addicted to coke, alcohol and weed. He was really abusive but now is sorry. But im hurting. What should I do?

We are uni students and I've only known him like 8 months. At first not frequent. I don't do drugs or even smoke but I like alcohol a few times a week. We ended up hooking up and he started wanting to hang out with me more. I really enjoyed it. I felt really at ease with him. He told me he is "an alcoholic". He was always drinking beers. He told me he took coke sometimes but was under control. Like only taking it when not studying. He is kinda chatty and fun on coke. I don't mind weed. Everyone does weed. But the coke is worrying. Because he starred using it more. And he wants me staying up all night with him. I started getting behind with my own studies. And drinking more. He says he wants off coke so I was giving him a safe place to come off it. I thought. He would crash out days. He started getting ketamine instead. I don't like him on that. And told him. I didn't want to give him drug money but I'm blowing through a lot of money getting him food and driving him around. If I take him home he starts messaging me hours later that he's depressed and miserable. And I end up picking him up again. I do enjoy his company and we have had sex sometimes. And I like cuddling him. But I am afraid he's just using me cos of his habit. I wanted to help him. I try to get him to study when I study. Recently his mates got him coke tho. And I don't know if it's because he ran out of weed and alcohol or if its just the coke withdrawal but he flipped out calling me names and demanding money. He hadn't even asked for money. I took him home. But he texted and phoned me constantly. Really spiteful nasty things. He threatened to ruin my life. He calmed down and is now sorry but I've said we can't hang out anymore. But I'm sad. I feel lonely without him. But I can't help him. He says he won't do drugs anymore. Just booze and weed. But I don't believe him. Or at least.. should I even try help him after the way he acted? I'm a little scared of him now.

This man is an alcoholic and drug addict and your are correct: he is USING YOU. Get away from him. Block him on all your devices. Change your phone number. Get a restraining order if you have to.

YOU CAN NOT HELP HIM. He is not interested in changing and is only saying he is sorry so he can crash at your pad and use you again. Anyone who is abusive like that will continue to be so because he is completely out of control due to HIS drug abuse.

End this relationship or it WILL RUIN YOU. He's being truthful when he says that.

Since he's already threatened you, you have a solid case for instituting a restraining order. I'd suggest you do this immediately and FIRST, tell him he cannot come over anymore and your friendship or whatever you can call it, is over.

You do not want to see him or hear from him. Then block him on everything and truthfully, I'd get a new phone number. Tell all of your friends you are done with him and if he contacts them, to not give out any of your personal information: i. e. phone number.

Go see a therapist who will give you the inside information on how drug addicts and alcoholics act to get support from others who are not addicts. They are users and abusers. It's very sad that such a young man is so far gone.

But your first priority to to PROTECT YOURSELF. You. need to succeed in school. Do not let this guy distract you. Addicts can be very charming to get their way and have crash friends. Let him get to a treatment program. That is where he belongs and it usually takes many, many attempts for people to get straight. Maybe 10 years from now he'll apologive properly. It won't happen now. I'm sorry. Do what you need to do and get rid of him. He's no friend to himself or you. Good luck.

Definitely not crack or meth. Yet. I know I need to close the door on him. But I did feel like we were best friends with all the time spent together doing fun things. I do want him to sort himself out. I know - I'm not going to be able to help him. Only he can choose to do that. I was OK just being there for him and gently encouraging him to sort himself out. But he's never flipped out or been mean like he was before.

You say stop supporting bums. I agree. But don't some people turn their lives around? I want him to. How do you walk away from someone you care about?
