It varies. Some autistic people aren't as easy to figure out as others. Some might get confused for being just painfully shy and awkward but not necessarily autistic.

But for the more obvious cases it's usually having outbursts when something triggers them. Not looking you in the eyes at all. Not laughing when something funny is being told. Being way too blunt to the point it's inappropriate.

The Sally-Anne test is the gold standard. You can probably weave a version of it into normal public speech. It can be hard to tell whether someone is autistic or just an ahole... frankly I would run not walk either way... but that's just my opinion
