When an older man calls you "kid", a way to flirt?

This older guy calls me "kid" sometimes. I'm not actually a child, I'm in my early 20s, but he's in his 40s. He does it in a joking way. He also flirts with me a lot and has made sexual jokes, etc. So is it just a way of older men flirting with younger women?

Yes, I am 39 and Heather in my office is 24, I call her "Kiddo" all the time. It's my way of letting her know she is pretty - without crossing too many lines. Women my age handle compliments completely differently than younger women. For instance, Steph, my wife's friend - I can tell her what I am really thinking anytime. If she looks good, I will tell her so. Once, when she wore a bikini, I told her "your ass looks great in that suit", and she said "really? - thank you".

There are very few innocuous words of affection an older man can use to a younger woman without coming off like a creep, or opening himself to sexual harassment.

"Dear" can bring on the feminists as well as being outdated and inappropriate.

"Honey" "Sweetie" ditto.

At least kid is harmless and gender neutral, but also somewhat friendly without being overly familiar.

He also calls me "Dear" all the time...a lot more often than kid actually. But I personally don't mind. Some might not like it though.

I call a younger girl "kid", especially if I see her doing something we both know isn't very adult: pouting, wishful thinking, general teenage angstiness. It may or may not be flirting, depending on her response.
