How do I approach this situation?

I married my husband last year and things have been great. My eight-year-old daughter is the light of my life and is overall a good kid. Recently, she expressed interest in joining the Space Force when she gets older after learning more about it from my stepfather (an Air Force vet).

Yesterday, my stepfather was able to get a Space Force shirt for my daughter from one of his friends. I gave it to my daughter and she looked at the shirt sadly— not the reaction I was expecting given how gung-ho she was about the Space Force. I just assumed that she quickly lost interest in the idea, as children tend to do. She told me that the Space Force wouldn’t want “an overweight girl with autism”. This is the first time, I’ve ever heard her complain about her weight or the fact that she was on the spectrum, so I thought that maybe someone at school had been picking on her. I asked her had anyone been making fun of her. She said that my husband made a comment about her being overweight and that the Space Force probably wouldn’t accept someone with autism.

This doesn’t sound like something that my husband would say. However, want to protect my daughter if he did indeed make these comments. How should I approach this situation?
