If it was really just a joke, why didn't anyone laugh?

Most of us have had the experience of having a friend or loved one say something that felt cruel or disrespectful. When we then confronted the speaker, they responded, "It was just a joke!" as if that excused saying something hurtful.

Step-brother to my fiancee, "Wow, the ring he got for his first wife was much bigger!"

Step-father to my mother, "No, it's not very good, but I didn't marry you for your cooking."

Partner to employees after a very busy and productive day, "You're not gonna leave just because it's five o'clock, are you? You haven't earned your salary yet!"

Girlfriend, "So. . . are you in yet?"

Some topics are so emotionally laden that they should NEVER be the subject of a joke. NEVER! What experiences do you have with being on the receiving end of such a joke?

This really hits close to home….
It’s unfortunate to witness such occurrences because you know damn well your mom will never tell you about the comment the bastard made not marrying her due to her cooking..
Or if the girlfriend was never freshly into you for something other than sex in her terms…
Nor will the employees ever speak up due to shame over being told they didn’t work enough according to the other person who clearly doesn’t see the same grateful boss you have shown to be appreciative of…..


For that and more I completely tip my hat to you for dshariing this with us…

Your mom’s cooking is never to be taken for granted. So remember to tell your mom you love her for always being there for you when you were hungry and were fed. If your stepfather said that in front of you or knew you could have heard what he said then I would encourage you to wait for the right timing to give him what’s coming.. all in due time… ain’t nobody gonna talk down to mom while I’m around..


Your so called “partner” made his position clear to you and the workers… he is never going to be satisfied with the people who are on his payroll because he is very greedy and knows little to no leadership potential… it’s quite admirable to see someone stand up for the little guys without their knowledge… I think you would do better with that partner of yours…


I would continue this later, because I think you got my drift…. It is impossible to expect any type of change simply by confronting people even if they apologize for the words they chose to say… the damage is done. And it certainly has left a scar on your impression of them…


You have a kind soul…and I think now that you see people for who they truly are should be the best indicator as to moving forward. Don’t let them get a reaction from you, it could be what they truly want to see. But you are better than them. 100%


Hug your mom and tell her you appreciate her for all the meals she fed. Tell her to say the word and you’ll always her no matter who tries to undermine her or disrespect her. Pray to God she lives in peace.


Give the girlfriend the boot. Let her fuck herself with her dildos if she can’t respect you or the attention you give her. Plenty of other women who can get a man harder simply by their charm…


But your employees a surprise lunch… let them know they way you appreciate their time and effort.. company is not the same without them. If the partner disagrees with anything you’ve taken the initiative to do, tell him to take the day off. That lunch ain’t for him… your actions will not go unnoticed by your employees.

I think this is where tact comes into play. Knowing what is okay to say and when, as well as knowing your audience.
