Do/Would you honestly care about your partner's past, in terms of jobs, friendships, relationships, legal history, financial decisions?

Jobs just means where they worked at before their current one, friendships meaning how many friends have they had, relationships and legal history are self explanatory, and financial decisions meaning their credit history, what did they spend their money on, so on and so forth

It’s important to know who you’re going to share your life with, which includes their good and bad habits. Perhaps they’re AWESOME at balancing a checkbook but HORRIBLE at navigating their social calendar…. You shouldn’t both be awful at the same things.


Yeah, relationship-wise, if you’ve chosen someone who burned through all the women in the land and is now at your door… think where his junk has been and why you’d want it…. Nobody is “all that”. A few past relationships here and there is fine. The heart wants what it wants and everyone has a past. But the guy who has slept with everyone … or is a self-proclaimed gigolo… is most likely not your guy.


And before the guys start whining “what about the girls who do this?” I will say there are women who do the same thing… it’s not ok… who wants a gal who EVERYONE left right and center have been with?

You just asked if I would care and the answer is yes, and I think nearly everybody would care. That is not the same as saying “would you refuse to date someone due to this” just whether I would care. How would you NOT care about this type of thing, it all leads to who we are today, I might care in a negative way like as a warning sign, or I might care in a positive way like seeing what he has overcome, but in some way, yes of course I would care.

Well that really depends on how you mean “partner” but assuming you’re talking about a long term relationship attempt with potential for marriage then I don’t there is a mature intelligent person that wouldn't care.


Yes there are things in the past that needn’t be shared , not because they should remain secret but because they are personal and bare to present or future relevance. However when it comes to finances and legal whether criminal or otherwise they more often than not need to be shared … the timing of that sharing however well that’s clearly up for debate but the hard and fast rule is , if you would want to know this about your “partner” then there is a strong likelihood that they should be told. When sometime small is hidden , partners often wonder why it was hidden which most of us can understand.

Unless it was something serious, like a lengthy jail sentence, I couldn't care less. My husband and I have discussed very little from our pasts, and we have been married almost 15 years. The past is largely irrevalant to anything happening now.

Yeah to a certain extent. These are just a few examples.

The following would be a few dealbreakers:

Job wise : if he'd worked in an abitour in the past. Or had worked as a bailiff.

Relationship Wise:I'd he'd cheated in past relationships or had been abusive or controlling in any way.

Financial:if he had a gambling addiction in the past. Or put someone else in debt

While we all have a past, I think some things can't be overlooked , as it can tell you a lot about who a person is and what their potential is with you.

Yeah I would since it shows what kind of person they are, can they hold a job, are they a criminal, are they a hoe, do they have a massive debt.. It all matters especially for a romantic relationship where I would be somewhat tied to this person and open to financial loss and diseases from them.

I normally don’t pay too much heed about her past, previous lovers non issue, what is an issue is if she had unprotected sex with them and have STIs or kids, in which case I’ll pass.

Her finances? Yup her credit history does matter as bad credit in US can be a death knell for many aspects especially if we get to the point of cohabitation.
