Where does the stereotype of the crazy Latina come from?

Next month (Sept 20th) will be my first wedding anniversary and I haven't had a single argument with my American husband. I've actually mild-tempered.

First it was the stereotype of us being very religious. I'm actually atheist. Nowadays I've noticed the ''crazy latina'' has been on the trend for a while now. Where is that coming from? Do you really believe in stereotypes? Someone crazy isn't cute. That's someone unstable and not suitable for any long-term relationship or marriage. I think that would get old so fast.

I'm dedicated, loyal and family-oriented, not loud-mouth nor crazy.

I haven't experienced that. In my experience, many Latinas seem friendly and have a good sense of humor, and they also put in effort to look good for their partner even when staying at home instead of like the majority of White American women that often put in little to no effort at home, but try to look good for strangers when going out in public because they aren't loyal at all. I wouldn't be surprised if the "crazy Latina" thing you talk about is actually something created by liberal White women that are jealous that they are not liked by many men in society anymore due to their corrupted morals and behavior.

I mean, sounds like you two really aren't together, so the no argument thing is far from impressive. Kinda have to be around each other first. Secondly, then it is the country you want to go towards that created this stereotype and they'll be throwing more on you. You'll always be unwelcome by many of them, legal or not, just because of the colour of your skin and your son will face the same, which you'll be to blame for.

I find it sad those that want to be part of the toxic stereotype through TikTok videos. It would be great if instead of the bad stereotype, they were promoting the good one such as being loyal and family-oriented. Could that be one of the reasons why that bad reputation has spread?
Personally, I find it very weird to be seen as some crazy and spicy species. It sounds like a weird fixation.
Then not all Americans are white. Not all Latinas are tanned either; my mother is white, so was her grandma. If you notice my profile picture, my husband is mestizo. Our son came out white and my husband filed for a CRBA (consular report for birth abroad) when he was here last month. Our son has dual citizenship. He's both Peruvian and American.

Probably from their usual bad temper. I don t say this just for prejudices, I actually noticed latino-originated people have a more sensitive nervous system, therefore some of them have a really easy time to express emotions more freely. It also comes down from education, culture etc.
Of course, I will not generalize , there are different people with different tempers out there

Could the sensitive nervous system be the result of how they were raised as kids? I know our Latina culture relies on physical punishment (it used to be used as first resort, as the only way to raise a kid; nowadays there are various alternative) too much. I plan to educate our son differently.

True. Yet this is what I've noticed. If a Latina has a bad temper, some see it as cute or that she's standing up for herself. However, if it was a white or black woman with a bad temper, all of the sudden it's annoying and not cute.

Some stereotypes are more true than others because they're actually TRUE! For example since you are Latina, I've met a lot of Latinas and everyone of them could dance and move really well. They told me it's because they all grow up with music in the home and everyone dances socially. It's like the "rhythm of life" for them.

Latinas have been known to be quite possessive and quick to anger about other women hitting on their man. They can also be very stubborn and easy to anger, but I believe it all fits into your standard bell curve. There are extremes at both ends, and the majority falls somewhere in between.

Where in the bell curve would I fit in:
- I wasn't really a good dancer. I started improving just a couple days before our wedding and during our wedding reception party. My husband got a bit better too.

- Unlike the stereotype of us popping many kids, I just recently had my first and only child on May 15th (via emergency C-section) at the late age of 38. My husband and I are planning to have our 2nd and last child within a year or 2 at most. We can't wait too long, esp me since I'm in my last fertile years.

- In terms of religion, I don't share any and it's been nearly 3 decades since I've both abandoned it and completely deny the existence of a god. My husband and I are atheists. We got married at a city hall/courthouse. Though my grandma (my son's great-grandma) has lately been pressuring us to baptize our son and is being too pushy about it. My answer to that is an obvious no. We're the parents.

- Easily angered and jealous towards other women doesn't fit me either. I was actually the polar opposite in a past relationship (before meeting my husband) to the point my mother and another family relative were wondering why I wasn't saying anything whenever he would post pictures of him going to clubs and drinking with other women. My mother even once again ''You have no reaction at all, do you even love yourself, you're too trusting, he's already cheating, I would be beyond furious''. I suppose that's the other extreme of doing nothing. Now I agree that was blatant disrespect. Plus I got scammed by him. I never got my money back. Oh well. But moving on, I found better and now I'm married and have a nearly 3 month-old baby boy. I won't allow myself to get disrespected like that with my husband but I wouldn't fight for a cheater either. If he cheats, I would file for divorce and he's out. He's a grown man, old enough to reject a woman's advances. No one steals your man. If he cheats then he is a willing participant.

- In regards to the stereotype of the tough Latina mother that using chanclas, says ''I'll give you something to cry about'' or other objects to punish her child, I actually hate anything that was to do with physically hurting a child. I've noticed that's usually done in anger to let off some steam and that's wrong. You should never correct a child when you're upset. My husband and I aren't interested in ever using corporal punishment on our son. There goes another thing I don't fit either.

Things I do fit:
- Hard-working (when I was working; now I'm on maternal leave taking care of our son and my husband is sending me money monthly)

- Loves to cook and would spoiled my husband with larger meals when he lasted visited me. He's coming back in December and then in May.

- Im family-oriented and rarely into parties. I've never smoked in my life and would only drink once in a while during family reunions or a major event or on my b-day party a long while back.
So given that's my description, I suppose I would be somewhere in the middle. What do you think?

Tbh Latinas are treated like caricatures nowadays. Especially on apps like TikTok. And the saddest part is that many of the newer generation of American Latinas are playing into it themselves. I also really dislike the "toxic Latina" stereotype. People say it's not that deep but you have plenty of people taking it serious and bashing a whole group of women as "undatable" or "low class" for it.

"Latina"? That was one of those terms Americans use to refer to Mexicans, right? I've absolutely no idea since the whole idea of "Latino / Latina" being a separate race isn't even a thing over here in Europe.
I guess Mediterranean people aren't necessarily the same as Germanic people, nor Celts like myself, but there is basically a smooth racial gradient south through Europe from top to bottom, so there is generally little point in trying to make racial distinctions. It just seems a bit weird and alien that Americans have invented a racial divide from what used to just be a national divide... but I guess they do that quite a lot.

I say this in an endearing way, but Latina people often come from culture that love being dramatic and very passionate hence Spanish Soap Oprah's. The reason people think that is because there are lots of crazy woman from all races but since they come from a culture that is so expressive they hold back less than people from cultures that aren't like that such as America. Though Soap Operas are just that. I used to see a couple of them and honestly, they had so much plots and drama (ex: thinking your father isn't your father, someone lying about you being a product of your father's friend... but nope, it was someone's lie in other to destroy a family; nevermind, your dad is your dad after all) and twisting things around that it's obviously false. Or another soap opera was about a bullied girl changing her clothes and hairstyle and everything getting fooled that it's her cousin. That wouldn't work in real life, lol.

Maybe the stereotype comes from portrayals on TV or film, like in telenovelas or something. It's all about drama.
Maybe some people think Latinas have fiery, passionate personalities. Italian women are portrayed that way, too.

By the way, one of my wife's brothers is married to a woman from Peru. I have to admit that she is strong willed, but sweet and cultured.

I once recalled seeing a melodramatic scene of a Latina mother dragging her teen daughter out of the car and screaming at her for having a boyfriend. The sad part is noticing how that's still approved even now. There were several comments on youtube defending that type of behavior. The teen then didn't trust her parents, esp her mother. Personally I see yelling as verbal abuse. That example would be bad parenting.

Another way to understand the Latina stereotype is that in latin culture they enforce directness and are very passionate about their beliefs. The one about being very passionate about their beliefs sounds about right. Several family members from my mother's side has this belief (I don't) about the evil stare thing and how it affects a baby. They believe in the concept of a curse being brought by a malevolent stare.

But each person is different, there are many things that play a role in how someone is and everyone will grow up with their own personality traits, but the crazy Latina is something that the media has created by dramatizing certain characteristics.

It may have something to South America being violent which is why they have a very high crime rate. I could trace that from way back during how they revolted from the Spaniards after being oppressed. Stereotypes don't always come out of nowhere. There's always a reason for that. No popular country nor continent is exempted from having stereotypes.

I'm well aware about how the Spaniards are so violent in South America but that's what caused it. The suppression of Latin Americans until they start revolting violently. It mimics how if people suppress to much, they explode in anger. I'm in my Peru and we're trying to solve this long-distance marriage. We've already submitted the application for an spousal visa. This means I'll be coming legally.
