What does forgiveness mean to you?

How would you define forgiveness? Do you believe forgiveness is for yourself or for others? Would you forgive those who wronged you and why? I want to have a serious conversation about forgiveness. So please be respectful in the responses.

I hadn't really thought about this question very much until I saw a recent Matt Walsh clip. And I think he put it pretty well.

Basically, forgiving someone does not mean you forget what they have done, nor does it mean they don't still need to face consequences for the things they have done.

Instead forgiving someone is letting go of the anger, Hatred, or other negative feelings you have for something someone has done to you. To no longer get give them control over your thoughts and emotions whenever they're around or on your mind.

I think about it kind of like a bear right? Say a bear comes wandering through your area and attacks someone you care about. You might haye the bear in that moment like anyone else would.

But eventually you might realize that the bear is just being a bear and hating it for being what it is is not productive. So you let that anger and hatred go.

BUT that does not mean the bear does not need to be dealt with. "Just being a bear" doesn't mean you have to put up with it being g around you and pote tially cUsing more trouble. Either it needs to be removed from the area, away from people. Or it has to be put down because it's just too big a risk to let it go and it come back and case even more harm.

So we don't need to hate the bear in order to still know we can't have them wandering around the rest of us.

This is a very good question surprising I saw this on here.. Forgiveness is to forget what was done to you that's what I think about it because if you bring it up ever so often to the person you "forgave" did you really forgive them? No, forgiveness is also for yourself so you don't think or dwell or ruin your positivity or who you are as a person. They messed up but don't mess up yourself for what they did forgive them forget and move on. I even respect if you forgive them and separate from them after but don't ever bring them up in a bad light because then you never forgave and never forgot.

For me, forgiveness feels like an act of self-care as much as compassion. It frees up emotional energy and allows healing, rather than staying stuck in the pain of the past! And you can forgive someone in your heart but still set boundaries, or even choose not to have them in your life. :)

Forgiveness and reconciliation are two different things, you can forgive without forgetting, recognize that what they did was wrong, let go of that pain and move on. In most cases, You don’t have to talk to them again.

It's moving past something negative that has happened between to parties. It depends on the situation, but it can be for the benefit of both people. I can forgive some actions and some I couldn't. It depends on exactly what happened. Sometimes, forgiveness is extremely easy to give, especially if you have some understanding of your responsibility to the situation.
