was this man pretty young himself when he was abusive, and was this like 50 years ago? and how bad was it? if he was just a bit abusive back in the 70s or something as a very young guy and he never did it ever again, he probably won't do it again but there's a small chance he could be abusive again. personally i would think about it, but i could still date him. now if this man was like 40 and married a 19 yo and hit her a lot, even if he's like 70 now it would be best to avoid him. much more likely to be abusive, and his morals are probably still bad even decades later.

We have patterns that we follow. Therefore it's safe to not believe him as that's a sign of what will be pattern behaviour. Though it's hard to say if it hasn't become a pattern yet.

Actions matter more than words so if he's dated others without abuse then I'd believe him. But if not then it's a hard call.

If I were you, id like to think yes id believe him, otherwise I wouldn't stay with him very long. Honestly to get to a place you are comfortable enough with someone for them to tell you that, that's normally reason enough to trust them... I feel like this is one of those questions only you can answer. anyone who answers it for you doesn't really understand you or him.
