When I was 18, a 25 year old learned through a school counsellor he was friends that was I was lonely and depressed, and he befriended me because he thought I was pretty and would be very easy to get.

For 3 months he showered me with attention, bought me things and included me in all his daily activities around the school, and then when he tried to introduce me to his friends, he learned I had social anxiety around strangers. Then he was too embarrassed to ever admit he liked me, so he denied ever leading me on or purposely being nice to me to make me like him.

That was the most painful rejection in my life, because it was the first rejection in my life where the attraction and feelings were mutual.

In my younger years, I would either like guys that did not like me back, or guys would like me, but I did not like them back. I do not count the 25 year old, that liked me at 18, as a boyfriend, because he never verbally asked me out or expressed verbal words suggesting we were dating, but he did behave like somebody who was interested in me. He even cried for 8 hours when I told him I was having a bad day.

That was before he saw me act dumb around his friends and lost interest in dating me or being in a romantic relationship with me.

We had to break up. I didn’t want to, but it wasn’t practical. He was a year older than me and graduated and was going off to college on the other side of the country. It was amicable but painful.
