Historically, a man's worth has been tied to his ability to provide and secure a high-value partner. A beautiful or successful partner is often, unfortunately, viewed as a trophy that highlights his own desirability and social standing.

Societal conditioning places pressure on men to be providers and to succeed in multiple arenas, including finding a partner who enhances their image.

High-value men have an abundance of choices and need not restrict themselves. A man is more likely to commit when he believes he has found a partner who is worth sacrificing his freedom for.

They aren't. I don't know that they ever were. As far as I know people have always freely been considered "too good for" or "not good enough for" the person they are with depending on how they themselves are compared to the person there with.
