Distance in kilometres (miles) or travel time never define long distance relationship. Two people living in same city – in one street may have long distance relationship because of their strange circumstances. A relationship is considered "long-distance" when partners cannot easily meet for spontaneous, in-person visits. In most cases it is defined by more than 2 to 4 or more hours driving distance apart. It is defined more by the inability to see each other regularly, - every day or every week, than a specific mileage, with average long-distance - living roughly 125 miles or more apart – making them unable to meet frequently. If you cannot easily have a cup of coffee together frequently, or have a dinner together, or easily visit on a impulse, it is considered long-distance relationship. 2-hour drive can be long-distance to someone without a car, while a 4-hour drive might feel manageable to others, if they have long week end holidays – say Saturday and Sunday. If seeing each other requires significant planning and turns a visit into a full weekend trip rather than a casual date, it is generally considered an LDR, it is subjective mater. If the couple feel the distance – in terms of drive or time, is a major factor in their ability to connect it is long distance relationship. Video calls cannot give the feelings of meeting similar to physical oneness and psychological needs, even if they are talking on video call for hours every day. Meeting face to face – in person is a different thing.

Just for trivia, the Swedes have this so called "1000 km rule", above which sexual encounters do not count anymore as cheating. Other countries probably as well...

  • I’m here on GAG to decode relationships and call out the red flags and fairy tales for you 😏

I’d say anything where you can’t just casually meet up after work or on weekends becomes “long distance” – usually past 1–2 hours away or needing a plane/train.

If planning every visit feels like a mini vacation, congrats, you’re in long-distance territory ❤️

My second girlfriend went to university, 200 miles away so that would have been long distance

The first moved to Poland so definitely long distance

Luckily we were adult enough to know that the relationship wouldn't work at that scale so broke up first

Here in LA more than 20 miles depending on the time of day, since at certain times of day the traffic is just incredible

I'd say 5 miles for LA.

Yeah of course that limits your possibilities to exactly two people that live within 5 mi that are within your age range and of the correct gender.
