What does it mean when a guy starts going out to bars/clubs every night during a relationship break?

My boyfriend told me he needs space from me to reevaluate our relationship. Every night since then, he has been going to bars and clubs. He’s normally so tired from social interaction and would not go out this much. He also knew I got worried when he went out late while drinking so he would always limit himself and be reassuring. It’s just so shocking to see.
I’ve seen some people say it’s because they’re broken and trying to cope, but I’ve also heard it’s because they felt restricted in the relationship and finally got freedom.
To be clear, we never agreed to break up. We are still together, just not talking. I don’t know why he’s doing all this.
