What do you think about people who choose to marry themselves?

I don’t judge people who choose to “marry themselves.” If it’s simply a symbolic way of saying, “I’m going to value myself, stop relying on others for validation, and commit to my own happiness,” I think that’s a healthy message.

Where I become more skeptical is when it’s presented as a substitute for human relationships. Humans are biologically and psychologically social creatures. Most of us are wired to seek companionship, emotional intimacy, physical affection, and, for many, romantic love and family. Those needs don’t disappear because we make a symbolic commitment to ourselves.

Self-love and self-respect are essential, but they aren’t the same as being loved by someone else. A healthy relationship should complement self-love, not replace it and self-love shouldn’t be used as a reason to avoid meaningful connections with others.

Of course, not everyone wants a partner or children, and that’s a perfectly valid choice. Some people genuinely thrive living independently. But I don’t think “marrying yourself” changes our underlying human nature. For the majority of people, deep relationships, friendship, intimacy, and a sense of belonging remain important contributors to long-term well-being.

So if it’s a personal ritual of self-acceptance, l would even agree with it. If it’s meant to suggest that people no longer need close human relationships, I think it misunderstands a fundamental part of what makes us human.

Marrying yourself can be symbolic self-love, healing after trauma, or rejecting pressure to couple up. That part is cute. But if it’s done out of bitterness, attention-seeking, or fear of real intimacy, huge red flag.

Love yourself deeply, yes. Just don’t use “self-marriage” to emotionally ghost real connections.
