And do you think that it can be a bit selfish in some ways because the person who chooses to rip the band aid as it were is making a decision for both without taking into consideration the other and just assuming that it's best for all?

I've done that hundreds of times. With young guys under my command in the military who were refusing to grow up or guys who froze in life or death situations. With both my sisters and my mother who had their own monumental problems. With friends I saw heading down the wrong path. With women I've dated who avoided accountability or hard work like the plague. With women who thought I could be manipulated like a Ken Doll. With business leaders who couldn't face into their own flawed business model or put their shoulder into revitalizing an old tired business that needed to evolve or die.

And I've had it done to me. By friends mostly. People like me who cared more about helping me see the train approaching than making things easy for themselves.

I’ve done the “cruel to be kind” breakup thing maybe three times. Been on the receiving end twice. It can absolutely be selfish, especially when it’s rushed or used as an excuse to avoid guilt.

But when someone’s checked out and staying would mean breadcrumbing, cheating, or lovebombing-then-ghosting, ripping the band-aid is actually the lesser evil. Not considering the other person at all is cold; being honest, clear, and firm is painful but respectful.
