If I failed my birthday goal for my dad, was it all for nothing?

My father's birthday is this Sunday on July 26th. Unlike any other birthdays I wanted to surprise by beating his checkers rival from his youth he couldn't win and bring home the money, give him what he couldn't accomplish. He lost the board game watch to a score of 4-10 and 5 draws.

His rival was retiring and I managed to come on time. So close, he even said I played better than my father but was still no match for him. I still lost 1-2 and 8 draws. I could've continued and maybe son but got exhausted by then.

I tried all I could and there would be no other chances. He's no longer going to play anymore. That was my last opportunity. Was it all for nothing? I'm not bringing home anything but worthless $200 for being there. Was it all for nothing?

Honestly had I continued playing, I would've lost more. He was a very strong opponent.

I don't want my name to come out that's why. I feel embarrased to even sound childish about feeling sad about losing that checkers match.

I know. It wasn't for me though. I'm not the one into competition. I was doing it for my father, do what he always wanted

You gained experience and a moral sense of helping your father out it wasn't all for nothing. If you want to get better download a few checker games and play against a computer on different levels

True but I was doing this as a special gift for my father. From time to time, he would talk about his rival he couldn't beat. That rival would give him a hard time every time he lost the match. I wanted to make my father feel better by bringing more the money, by beating his opponent, accomplishing it for him.
