How do we build a secure foundation in a long-distance, burned-out relationship?

My partner and I have liked each other since 2025 and decided to give it a shot in 2026. Like every couple, we have had arguments which have hurt us both, but we always make up. Though, in the middle of us being together, he started wanting to be alone. It has nothing to do with me, we have established that, but the fact that past relationships (romantic, platonic, and family) have burnt him out. He works a blue collar job with blue collar hours, plus he just moved to a new state to get anyway from family, so he has been trying to settle down. We have seen each other twice, and plan on seeing each other again in about two weeks. He told me romantically he has been feeling nothing. He doesn't know when it started. In fact in general he feels nothing. He feels like a blank slate.

We seem to have this pattern of wanting to leave each other in every argument. We have decided not to bring it up anymore when we fight, as it feels threatening.
We both come from dysfunctional families. We want to build a strong foundation, but don’t know how.

We talked yesterday about how we could get back on track. He said the best thing I could do is support him and understand that if I wanted something, I need to tell him, and not get upset, because he is not thinking about romantic stuff at the moment. He doesn’t know why. He has just been thinking about how to survive the next day and the next and the next. He made it clear to me that he doesn’t want anything to do with women, so he is not thinking about another woman (I asked). When it comes to his heart and all, I have him.

As for me, I need reassurance. So, when I need it, I will just ask. We plan on going out more together and doing things. He said he will plan it.
Overall, we believe we are good partners for each other.

My question is, how can we build a strong foundation in our relationship? How can I feel more secure on my end?
