After a breakup caused by broken trust, how long should I wait to reach out?

My boyfriend of almost 6 years recently went through my texts with my best friend, discovered that I’d sent something that invaded his privacy and dumped me. He said « unfortunately I think I will need a good amount of time » when I told him to reach out to talk when he feels ready. Just to see where his head is at and see how he is doing?
