Why do some people avoid relationships?

Assuming someone has the time and the confidence, what would prevent them from getting into a relationship? Why would they choose not to get into one?

I actually have a roommate who just never wants to settle down or date. She's not interested in having a guy in her life. That may change one day...

Some people have had bad past experiences with relationships and so think (consciously or subconsciously) that every relationship will be the same.

They may not have found a guy/girl they want to devote time getting to know or forming a romantic relationship with.

They may be waiting to 'find' themselves. Or, they may not feel mature enough to have a relationship (which some girls equate with future marriage + babies).

They may think that it'll hold them back from whatever goals they're working towards. They might not want to be tied to a particular location in case an opportunity opens up. Or, they

My case is just that I'll probably be on the other side of the states in a few months (for grad school) and so don't want to start a relationship that will end up being a long-distance one. However, once I get settled wherever I'll be, I'd totally be open to starting one.

maybe they're more focused on other things like school,

or because they're frightened of being hurt or used.

Some honestly would rather be alone and don't believe in the concept of being with another person. Sometimes they're subconsciously afraid of commitment.

Some just aren't ready for one, while others haven't had the best of relationships, or have seen their fair share faulter, and they themselves have no wish nor desire to be in one. And some do it to avoid the possibility of being rejected and hurt.
