Did your long term relationship start off rocky or smooth?

The starts of all my relationships are never smooth, should I be looking for one that is? Are my relationships doomed from the start?

I think in most cases you can tell a lot about the future of the relationship by the beginning stages. People are usually best at getting along in the initial stages of relationships before you start seeing those flaws in each other. So if things are already rough in the beginning, it will probably only get worse over time.

My first serious relationship started off neither rough nor smooth I'd say. It was a little complicated at first because I liked him for awhile but he had a girlfriend. Eventually he realized that he liked me more than the girl he was with and he broke up with her and we got together. But after that things went pretty smoothly. But the longer we dated the more I realized we weren't right for each other and we were better as friends. Outcome: Mediocre beginning -> mediocre relationship

My second relationship was rocky all the way through because my ex was manipulative, selfish, and emotionally abusive. I don't know if I'd call the beginning rocky exactly, but it felt rushed and was far from ideal. Undesirable beginning -> undesirable relationship

My third/current relationship got off to a fantastic start. We were both single, both attracted, both similar, got along great, moved at comfortable pace, etc. And this relationship has been amazing. For the first time I feel like I'm with "the one."

So based on my experiences, the beginning does seem to indicate what the future will be like. Other people may have had different experiences though.

The most recent guy I was with, we're extremely compatible. The start was rocky though with ex drama that resulted in trust issues. We thought we moved past it, but I guess we never really did. It ended recently. Do you think, in the future (months to a year), an otherwise good relationship has a chance to succeed a second time around?

And I think you're right. I think the start is very important and will surely indicate how things will be after.

Started off very smooth and has continued that way for 2 years with very few downs and those have only been down to misunderstandings that soon get sorted.
