"Love is blind" - do you agree?

Do you think love is blind?

Coined by Shakespeare in Merchant of Venice:

"But love is blind and lovers cannot see/

The pretty follies that themselves commit"

I personally agree with the above context in that a lot of people are blind to their partner's faults and whatnot when they're "in love" with them.

But I've seen a lot of uses (today in particular) where people say that love is blind in a physical context - that if you fall in love with them you're blind to their physical faults. I think this is flawed because you are comfortable with their appearance BEFORE you fall in love with them most often.

When I think of "Love is blind"

It reminds me of the two quotes

"everything has beauty but not everyone sees it"

and

I forgot the actual quote but it goes something like this:

opportunity doesn't always present itself in slacks and a nice tie.

[basically says your future boyfriend/girlfriend will not have a tattoo on their forehead saying "future partner" nor, will your future job have the same notification]

Everyone has gone through the stage where they see a pretty person and are totally love struck by their appearance and once we get to know them they aren't that great and keep making excuses for their behavior.

I don't know much about love (I'm only 21) and don't really believe in it.

But from my experiences I would say love is something where you are know of your SO strengths and weaknesses and accept them for who they are.

I recently read an answer and she said:

When you meet someone great, we are all so intrgiued by this phenomenal person and we all say tell me more, tell me more! but as we get to know them more and more. We think wow I would not have done that. I would've done XYZ.

Then it is up to us to make excuses for their 'short comings' or accept what they did isn't exactly what I would've done but a good choice none the less.

Love is blind tends to have the first meaning you gave. It's the same when people talk about wearing the "rose colored glasses" meaning they see everything as good and OK even when it isn't, basically living in denial. Physical looks have at least some if not a huge amount of influence in the initial stages of attraction, most of the time. It's human nature. But that first meaning can turn into a huge problem for some people, it leads to co-dependency. I just answered a question a woman asked about staying with her long term boyfriend who is serially unemployed (gets jobs but quits them or gets fired after a week). After 4 years she's just starting to see that he might not be the man of her dreams, even though anyone else could have seen it long ago.

A lot of the time you either don't want to, or cannot see a persons flaws.

As for physical... I think there's a degree. I think you can be attracted to someone "lower" than you and still think they're absolutely beautiful, but not to the point where it looks like someone beat them with a shovel. So in that sense, maybe love is just partially sighted!

That being said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

Depends on your age, every time you get older you become more selective with people and don't accept many things, but! sometimes you need to be loved and ignore other things.

People just see how you look physically...I disagree, there are more important things than that but I would fall in love with someone who knows how to treat me.

I sort of believe it but not completely. Sure you can ignore someone's faults and stuff like that, but that's not being blind, that's just forcing yourself not to see. Being blind is just not seeing anything, and that's never a good kind of love...

Robert Solomon puts a very interesting case for love not being blind (which I subscribe to). He says that love is a product of a will, and thus of the intellect. He makes a distinction between the feelings confused for love (sexual arousal, affection, the desire for closeness) and the emotion of love. If love were simply an emotion like anger, hate, sadness, happiness, etc, then why can we love despite anger, sadness, hate, happiness, etc. If you're happy, you cannot simultaneously be mad. However, you can still be in love yet angry at your lover.

Also, have you ever heard of love at first sight between two ugly people? Of course not. Love at first sight then is just a poetic form of visually induced lust, and that falls into the category of "feelings confused for love."

I think love is blind (physically) for people that are sometimes not the best looking or have low self-esteem. The older (haha) love is blind is definitely true. People (like me) have tried countless times to make a relationship with someone that has terrible faults like addiction. I think sometimes people meet and get this fake image of someone and put them on a pedestal. After that they try and try to make it work but cannot because that is not who they are really with. I am sure 98% of the time or more it doesn't work out.

its not about failing to see there faults, its about focusing on their virtues. I knew my girlfriend faults but they didn't bother me bec of her virtues. If you win the lottery jump up from the couch and stub your toe. The pain is this your not blind to it you just aren't focused on it due to your happiness on winning

I believe yes love can be blinding in the sense that you ignore certain physical and emotional flaws when it comes to love. I think that everyone needs to be mindful of love's power over them so they can always keep a level head and approach it rationally and reasonably.

They are attracted by their appearance but it holds after they fall in love. They don't fall for each others appearances. Love becomes blind when they really love each others' everything. You know what I mean

Totally agree. It works in both good ways and bad ways. Love can be blind so that lovers won't be too shallow, but love can also be blind to abuse and bad behavior (abuse, cheating) as well.
