13 Reasons Why I'm The Not-So-Traditional Christian

After seeing the many questions on G@G, I see that a lot of Christians are all stereotyped into one big group. I guess you can say Im my own-kind-of-Christian... the Not-So-Traditional one.

#1 I Believe In God. Do you?

I honestly dont care if you believe in God or not. We’re all our own person. Just know that I believe in God. I wouldn't be here without him. And I know I’ll make it to Heaven one day.

#2 Not All My Friends Believe

Not sure what you’ve heard from other believers, but I still have non-Christian friends. And I will still pray for them, even if they dont want me to. We can be friends as long as we keep our opinions to ourselves. They dont question me and I dont question them. We respect eachothers beliefs. But if they do judge me, I won't be surprised because most Christians judge in return. We’re all judgmental af. And some of us lie too. Mostly white lies though...

#3 Don’t Forget, I’m Christian Too

Most people who hear the word Christian assume Catholic or Protestant. But Im actually Baptist. I can hardly tell you the difference. I just know my teacher was Catholic and they had 30 minute church service with little choir singing. My church on the other hand was 2 hours long with like an hour and a half of choir singing and 30 minutes of preaching. Also, Baptists are known for being Baptized. Its basically our way of becoming “saved” among some other things like walking down the aisle to the Pastor and professing our love for Jesus and God.

#4 I’ll Pray For You

I try to pray every night before bed. I dont get down on my knees bt I do sit up in bed. If for some reason I fall asleep before praying, I ask for forgiveness when I wake up and get to praying immediately. I pray about health, career, family, forgiveness for my cussing/white lies and more.

#5 The Music I Like

Not all Christians listen to church music 24/7. When at Church, thats probably the most church music I’ve heard. I listen to Gospel on occasion, probably 5 days out of the month, but for the most part, I listen to rap, country, pop, EDM, r&b, hiphop, oldies, etc. I know my grandpa was raised to not even dance to these kinds of music. But I’ve been dancing like crazy to em all my life.

#6 I Cuss Too

Just about everyone cusses these days. Sometimes I do it if im being too freaky, and sometimes I do it if im pissed. But I know one thing... Everytime I do, I immediately pray for forgivness. I hate cussing and often do it offguard. Yet, I could hardly watch Deadpool because all the cusswords were killing me. I often try to use substitute words like crap, freak, ish, hoe, trick, wench, etc. I will NEVER say the GD cussword. Thats utterly disrespectful to the Lord.

#7 How I Dress/Eat

Someone mentioned that Christian women should wear dresses/skirts (I think thats Jehovah Witness or something) and that we can't eat pork. Mmm, I don't know what these other Christians do, but I dont like skirts. I wear pants and almost every Sunday, I go to church in jeans and a graphic tee. Also, i love pork, and I think my church even cooks it for our occasional Sunday meals. I honestly dont know what we’re “not supposed to eat” aside from other people (cannibalism) lol. But I mean on 1st Sundays we do have the Holy Communion (crackers and wine). And this is random, but I also dressup for Halloween although I hear we’re not supposed to.

#8 I Was Raised This Way

I was born in the Bible Belt. My mother raised my sister and I as Christians. We didn't have a choice and Im glad we didn't. We never even knew a choice existed. I love believing in God. I wouldn't be this far in life without him. However, we attended Public Schools so they didn't teach about Christian beliefs like private schools do.

#9 Do I Read Bible/Attend Church

I can’t tell you a verse by heart and I can hardly even read the pronounce John 13:21-30. I honestly have never read an actual Bible, and yet i still believe. I mean if you count the kids bible, yea I have read some stories out of there which kind of scared me. Yet they taught me a lot. Most Baptists attend church on Wednesdays and Sundays. I dont attend Wednesday bible study service and I dont attend Sunday school. But I do go to Sunday church service like 3 Sundays out of the month. As you can see, Im not at church today though.

#10 What I Give to the Church

So we have tithes and offerings. I think We’re supposed to give 10% of our checks to the church. Its hard to trust the people these days cause some preachers steal. If I have the money, I will give it, but if not, I usually drop $1-20 in the basket. I remember when our church used to do 3 different offerings in 1 service. It was hard to believe all that money was going where it was supposed to.

#11 Vegas, anyone?

My friend is of a different denomination and she told me that Christians aren’t supposed to go to Sin City and that we’re not supposed to gamble. I don't know about this bt i’m still tryna get to Vegas and I already gamble. Shoot, my fam used to go to the casino at least once a month. We even pray while we gamble, “Lord, please help me win big.” I think its okay to gamble as long as you dont become addicted to it.

#12 Who’s A Born-Again Virgin

My mom was shocked when I told her that I wanted to wait til marriage because she and my dad didn't. They were also Baptist Christians. I think its mostly Catholics who wait, I don't know. But anyways, I messed up and gave into pressure/temptation when I was 15 and in love with my 1st boyfriend. I still regret that time so much that I repented. I’ve since returned to celibacy and have been celibate for 8 years now. I know I can never be a virgin again, so I dont consider myself to be a born-again virgin. But some people told me that “celibate” isn't the correct word to use... that im actually “abstinent”. I don't know which it is, but I know my current boyfriend and I are waiting til marriage. However, we just began practicing oral sex, so I don't know if that along with masturbation kinda interrupts the cycle. I just know that we dont do vaginal and will never do disgusting anal sex.

#13 If You’ve Been Bad, Repent

We often repent and ask for forgiveness for our sins when we’ve done a major wrong. This is part of why Jesus died for our sins. With a little forgiveness, we can still be on the path to Heaven. Sincerely trying to obey God, follow the 10 Commandments, and change our actions will bring us closer to God.

Clearly, I don’t know everything about being a Christian, but as long as I know I’m a believer, thats all I’m worried about.

#8 I Was Raised This Way: I was raised in a way that is completely different from what papers say about my religion. I do struggle with that as for I have an open mind and view over both Religions. Personally I don't follow any religion, I believe in God, love and respect other humans.

#9 Do I Read Bible/Attend Church: I have read when I was a teenager because school made me, it was graded, I could have failed my class just because of "Religion" course.

#10 What I Give to the Church: honestly I don't. I just anonymously give a person or family I know who really needs money, clothes and food, regardless of their religion. At least what my budget can handle. I always give away clothes when I buy new ones.

#11 Vegas, anyone? YES but NO. I would love to visit VEGAS one day but not for the casino as for am not much of a player myself. I would rather spend my money checking nice restaurants and cool places in VEGAS instead of spending it in the casino.

#12 Who’s A Born-Again Virgin: I am not against waiting for marriage to have the time with my partner in bed. Not saying either we should have it everyday. But at least try it once before the marriage to check if you are really compatible and it will not create some kind of love life disorder later on! I have seen it happening.

#13 If You’ve Been Bad, Repent: I do agree but I think it will bring people closer together more. Love & Respect, good and bad, wrong and right, etc... Mostly all religions have those messages but are being taught in a wrong way I guess.

Here is how I am a Christian: I read self help books.
Here are the 10 self help books that I read:
1. The search for significance: Tells you how much God loves you, not because of anything you have or have done or have said... just because God is love.
2. boundaries: Love does not demand it's own way, don't boss people around to do what you want and then hate them for not doing it. Don't let people boss you around to do their biddings either.
3. Total Money Makeover: Owe no one anything except for love. The borrower is slave to the lender.
4. Daring Greatly: Do not be ashamed, because you are forgiven. God does not punish you anymore because Jesus took it all, he only lovingly disciplines you. You also must not shame others and judge others for sinning, but to kindly teach them to learn from their mistakes.
5. You are a badass: Remember that Jesus lives in you, you are connected to Jesus in that you are the temple of God for God to use you. Live like you are connected to God.
6. Think and grow rich: remember to have faith in God, that whatever you want God can do all things... all things are possible with God. Get rich if you want to give more to God, provide jobs for others... and give the poor.
7. nonviolent communication: Be kind always to people. Figure out what it is that they are feeling, and why they feel that way is because they have a need. Figure out their need and plainly let them know you understand them.
8. 7 habits of highly effective people: Your reputation is important, so figure out what you want to be known for and then think win win and try to help others win as well as you.
9. baring the wilderness: Some times everyone will reject what you have to say, but continue to believe in it anyway. Everyone hated Jesus, but Jesus continued to believe in what he had to say anyway.
10. the 4 agreements: Say only what needs to be said and make sure it is true and necessary (let your words be impeccable), to do take anything PERSONALLY (usually what people say is a reflection of them), don't assume anything and just always try your best.

1: Ya if course. If I didn't I wouldn't be Christian.

2: Yes as well. Neither of my friends are Christian. But that doesn't mean we don't have anything in common. So we can still be friends.

3: Catholic here. But I'm not really attached to it. Too strict I think. But I guess that's good too. At least I know what I'm supposed to do by letter most of the time.

7: I wear whatever I want. But what I want is usually well within the "appropriate" Catholic dress code. And as far as eating. Growing up I never ate meat on Fridays because of good Friday. My mom never made meat on Fridays. And we weren't supposed to eat it at a friend's house either on that day. I didn't know why until I was older. And I don't really do that anymore.

8: Raised 110% Roman Catholic. Right in Arkansas in the middle of the belt. Our mom is the strongest most perfect Christian I have ever met. And she made sure both me and my sister grew up to be able to be perfect too. My sister was a good kid. But I wandered off pretty far after a while. No fault of my raising I just wanted to try something else. I'm trying to go back now but it's much easier the first time.

9: I could probably quote you a quarter of the Bible if I tried. But at this point it's probably been a decade since I read the Bible. I have started going to church again but I don't know how long I'll last.

10: Oh right. I'll have to start doing that..

11: So money gambling is one I'm still clean of. I have bad luck never wanted to try. But Vegas would be fun. No harm there.

I don't believe in God. It was never really mentioned in my family, but I was forced to go the Church on Fridays in primary school. I found it boring and a waste of time. I would rather have been out playing or reading a good book. We weren't given a choice though. I actually thought most people thought the same as me, and it wasn't until I was older I realised people were actually serious about believing in God.

I've seen how religion can give people strength, because they believe that all the hardship they go through is for some bigger plan and in the end, as long as they are good and pray every night, they will get into heaven. And that's fine, we all have our ways of coping and religion can be a very good one. However, I choose to think of all the hardships in my life not as trials or tests, but simply bad things have happened and turned me into a stronger person because of it and that is what gives me strength.

Reagrdless of my beliefs however, I have read some pretty nice things from Christians explaining why they believe in God and it's quite nice to read them. It helps to brighten my day a bit and this was a fairly pleasant read too.

Yeah, so you're just a fake Christian... The whole point of being a Christian is following the teachings of Jesus. You don't read the bible so I wouldn't expect you to know. You're doing so many things against his teachings and what God told us not to do but you wanna say you're Christian and going to heaven. I love your take! I just stumbled across some holier than thou Christians here and the non-believers. As soon as they heard the word "Christian" they expect us to be exactly like Jesus which is impossible because clearly no one can be as holy as Him. He was a humble man yet he got persecuted and hated for being Holy. The truth is whether we are the non-traditional or religious Christians, there will always be some people who try to attack us for our belief. I am a non-traditional Christian myself and some people think I'm cherry picking the Bible words. One of my friends is devoted and people around find her to be annoying. Like what they really want from us? They want us to drop our faith which is not gonna happen for me. Oh also, I love it how some of them pick the Old Testament and want us to practise it when they have no idea about the Old vs New Testament.

I appreciate your take. I think a huge problem is other humans try to define how we best can be christians when in fact its about doing as Christ personallly instructs us to do. So I don't know if thats totally universal if that makes sense. To each their own. I encourage others to be kind and true. Otherwise, how they acheive that is their own choice. We respect each others beliefs. I wish we all could do that. My aunt is Wiccan, she had known her friends for twenty years and they dropped the friendship just because she was of a different faith.
