How I understand Matthew 6 on competing motives

I believe Matthew says you should choose ethics and morals over sensory indulgence or social gain.

Cause a good doctor saves lives while a bad doctor scams patients out of money

A good lawyer defends the weak while a bad lawyer helps child abusers and assault criminals escape justice

A good house keeper helps weak seniors while a bad house keeper wastes their money

A good therapist prevents suicide while a bad therapist excludes difficult patients to boost his reputation as a medical service employee

My understanding of Matthew 6 is that it's not a moral or ethical stance over money, or being good or bad at a job. What Christ is doing telling and asking us what's in your heart what is your motivation when you do something. Are you serving the Lord or are you serving wealth, power, prestige. He is chastising the pharisees and the saducees as caring more about how the look in front of men and showing off their money. Instead they should be motivated by serving the Lord and serving others.

The lawyer one is a tough one. I couldn’t do it, if a client told me he did it, I’d say I couldn’t represent him. And I bet a number of firms wouldn’t hire me.
