Why do muslims use surma in their undereye region?

Muslim guys used to wear coal eyeliner in villages but not anymore.
I still use the coal eyeliner.
Never bought the modern eyeliner.
It is just a norm for us.

I actually only realised about it when I look at some Imams in Mecca. It's not too popular within international community, but it's said that the Prophet Mohammed himself used it as well.

I have observed it a lot among persian influenced muslim areas aka Iranians, Afghans, Pakis, Indians, Parts of Central Asia but your point makes sense
