Same thing as astrology: they became widespread believed because of how the "foreseeing" is put, but they are ultimately not believable at all. Unless some of these "prophets of good/bad fortune" start becoming more focused on the person's specific reality.
Don't know if you noticed, but both those are awfully generic in their tellings.

I totally believe in fortune cookies. I've eaten them many times. I believe in horoscopes too. Many newspapers print them every day. Neither has any practical value.
