How Does One Have a 'Personal Relationship' with God?

How?

It's a serious question, because I just don't get it. How does this even work? I've never been very good with relationships, because I just do not understand other people, so to have a "relationship" with someone I can't even see would be far beyond the possible. Why would the omniscient, omnipotent, self-sufficient and perfect ruler of the universe even want a relationship, with anyone? What purpose could that possibly serve?

I guess a big part of the problem is the word "relationship", because what immediately comes to my mind when I think of that word isn't perhaps what most religious folk think of when they discuss God. Maybe a better way of putting it would be to say that one has a certain orientation towards God, or level of acceptance of "His" presence in one's life.

God reached me when I didn't want to be reached. I was a hardcore atheist. I'm a female who read gay fanfiction. Boy×boy type of stuff. I don't know if you can fathom that, but if you can, then I don't know what to say. I used to argue with my mom, telling her that God didn't exist and I didn't believe in Him. I believed in science. And I'm lying or exaggerated. That's really what I put my trust in and didn't question. At one point I didn't even care if God was real, I just wanted to continue reading my gay fanfiction. And it wasn't fluff either. It was smut and sick and depraved stuff. You don't understand. I'm not just talking about sexual stuff. I'm talking about incest, rape, and pedophilia to name a few. I didn't support these things in real life or do any of them, but I enjoyed reading about it. God freed me from all that. On the beginning of my post, I wasn't lying. I had a rich boyfriend who I was pretty sure I was going to go on vacation with to Hawaii. Never in my world did I stop to think that I needed God. And no. Nobody brainwashed me. My mom invited me to church because there was going to be a baptism. I said no. She said 'if you go, I'll never ask you again'. I had long done what I wanted and never went to church. I thought okay this is the last time. Nobody said anything to me. I tried to view the baptism from an aloof perspective. I guess it didn't work out for me in that sense, because something changed. That wasn't the last day I went to church. I still had my doubts. I kept going anyway. Not forced. After awhile, my mom did begin to tell me, you need to get baptized. I didn't want to get baptized. I was just, for some reason, going to church. But why? I didn't know. So I just decided to get baptized to get her off my tail. I lied to the pastor that I wanted to get baptized because I saw how the times were and knew that I wanted to be saved. I (lying) told him I planned to serve Christ for the rest of my life. Well did God really use those words against me (I say that lovingly). Days before my (dreaded) baptism, things began to slowly click into place. I found God. It all just seemed to click out of nowhere as if I knew God was true all along. Like one moment I didn't believe for anything and the next, God was right there with me. It wasn't a magic word anybody said. It was God Himself who took the veil from my eyes. I was never open. I didn't expect to recieve anything. I didn't know the reason I was going to church. Like I said, I didn't even need fulfillment. I was going to Hawaii. Well... that quickly went down the drain once I found God. I broke up with my boyfriend. I had committed myself to God and he didn't want any part of it. I said 'okay, let's break up'. I can't make any of this stuff up. And I can't lie. God won't let me. I am free and I am loved and nobody seems to understand. God bless 'em though.

Now back to your question. You just talk to God and marvel that He is there, sitting on His holy throne. Listening to you. You talk to Him everyday as you would with someone you are in love with. You're as close to Him as if your soul and His Spirit are knit together. There's nothing that can separate you. Jonathan loved David as his own soul. And no, not in a gay way. "There is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother," Proverbs 18:24. You are a friend of God. God is your FRIEND. You need to learn to love Him like that and as a husband. Because He is the Husband of the church. And you are part of church if you read the Bible and follow it. And you listen to the Holy Spirit. When I think of how I love God, I think of a man (I know God is GOD. I don't actually think of an image. I think of a personality. Because I have read the whole Bible, and you should too if you want to see the whole picture so to speak) who gave His life for me. I also think of someOne who is a Prince. Who is a Gentleman. Who is so perfectly innocent and lovely and understanding and caring and knowing and forgives me no matter how much I've failed Him. I talk to this person everyday, but sometimes I forget who He is. It's really hard because we can't see Him. But we know that He is there and He will always be there. Sitting on His holy throne. You just have to want to be near Him. Closer to Him. Ask Him for the love. Ask Him to put that real love in your heart for Him because you don't feel it. Not all the time anyway. He will do it.

Ask Him to keep you close. Ask Him to keep you as the apple of His eye. And Him yours. Ask Him to give you the same joy you felt the day you were saved. Everyday. Psalm 51. You should want to feel it everyday. Tell Him you love Him more than life itself and really mean it. "Delight thyself also in the LORD," Psalm 37:4. Keep Him as your first love as Revelation says. As God Himself says. Don't forget your first love. Talk to Him always. Laugh with Him. Enjoy His sense of humor. There are bits and pieces all over the Bible that will only fit together as a puzzle, if you read the whole thing. It didn't make sense to me, but when I read it, I saw everything. You also have to be open or else you might miss it. Don't read out of obligation. Read because you love it. Read because you love Him. Give Him your heart and trust that He will hold it so tenderly. So tenderly. Fall in love with God. This is not unbiblical. "First love," remember. That's literal. He's a husband to the church. That's literal. He loves her as He loves Himself. He loves you as He loves Himself. I don't know if you can fathom that. I can't. He loves you as He loves HIMSELF. Jesus literally says this Himself. "As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love," John 15:9. 'As I have loved myself, so have I love you'. This is true. Ephesians 5. This is love.

Ok, so in my estimation there are three levels at which people can have a 'relationship with God'. These are very distinct. However, the common denominator in all levels is that there is a relationship to something greater than one's ordinary (ego) self.

The first level is what I might call the 'doctrinal' or 'religious' level.

This is what most people who go to Church, are 'good people' (or think they are), but otherwise appear to have fairly unremarkable lives, are referring to.

Basically, their relationship with God is actually more like an interplay between various doctrines of their religion, and their own sense of faith and conscience. Essentially, these doctrines (a mish mash of moral teachings, scripture, influences of others from their Church and so on) have been implanted in their conscious and subconscious minds (for the most part) since they were very young, and have taken root via repetition and social conditioning. When engaging in life, we all have base tendencies (such as the tendency to reactivity, quick anger, greed, addiction and so on). Someone who has a doctrinal 'relationship with God' tends to pause in these moments, and open their psyche (via faith) to 'guidance' from a 'higher power'. What that tends to amount to is a felt sense of exalted direction. For instance, if one was about to get mad at one's friend, the person who has a religious relationship to God, might pray and receive guidance to 'love thy neighbor as thyself' - leading to refraining from anger, or approaching the situation with more compassion. The doctrinal relationship with God, however, is extremely limited. People who live at this level will deny that it is limited, because it is meaningful to them and they have not experienced the other levels.

The next level of relationship with God is what I might call the 'experiential' level.

Typically, those who are at this level tend to describe themselves as spiritual, rather than religious. It is still possible to have an experiential relationship with God and consider oneself religious - however, you'll tend to find that those who do are the religious people who appear vastly more open-minded, less dogmatic, less prone to group-think and so on. Often people at the experiential level have a heightened sense of creativity, purpose and insight. They tend to be rather interesting and often charismatic (though some can succumb to spiritual arrogance).

The experiential level of relationship with God occurs when one lives at a level whereby the borders of their ordinary, egoic self are permeable to a greater power. Typically, there has been a catalytic event which caused the ability to see beyond the ordinary - it may have been a near-death experience, a breakthrough in consciousness caused by deep meditation or an extraordinary flow-state in nature or during sports or dance. It could happen via sex, via the use of certain substances, via deep philosophical enquiry leading to a breakthrough (beyond merely an intellectual breakthrough), and many other ways. After this, there is often no going back. Once a person has seen beyond the mundane, there is a sense in which life becomes an homage to the relationship to that 'Great Beyond', which many people call God. You could also call it 'The Universe', 'The Divine' or whatever you want. At this point, people tend not to care because they are connected to it. Unlike in the doctrinal level, where they tend to get very irked by semantics - a person at the experiential level tends to understand that 'God' and 'Allah' are cultural descriptions for one and the same referent.

Similarly to the doctrinal level, the 'relationship' to God is mediated by opening one's ordinary self to a higher or greater power. However, this level is not so deeply mediated by 'faith' or 'belief' - since the person has already directly experienced that Great Beyond. It is more like communion or reconnection to that which one already knows to be true, yet forgets sometimes. It is often the case that those at the experiential level tend to cultivate this relationship to God via practices such as creative arts, writing, sports, nature immersion, meditation or yoga which facilitate their reconnection to the place of consciousness beyond their ego-self. This typically comes with a host of exalted states of being - like ecstasy, peace, insight, 'aha moments', gratitude and so on.

The final stage is what I might call the unity relationship. This is the stage at which one realizes that one IS God (or an emanation of God). Not in a 'messianic delusion' -type way. But in the same sense as a ray of sunlight is not separate from the sun, comes the recognition that the ego-self is not separate from the Great Self. I could speak much more on this, but have things to do, so will leave it there for now.

That's a great question to start with.

When God created us, it was in His own image. He exists in a place of relationship. We need to remember that God exists outside the confines of time, which complicates an explanation.

We were created for the express purpose of relationship. With Him and each other. What we call "sin" is the complicating factor. It separates us from God in a way that has led to the problems of the modern world, from our fascination with gossip and the latest societal change in Western society - "friends with benefits".

Sexual sin, perhaps more than any other, gets in the way of a relationship with God. St Paul describes it as the only sin that we commit against our own bodies. It's the oldest "New" development. The kind of sexual "freedom" in the concept of friends with benefits actually has its origins in the Old Testament. Two towns that Abraham's cousin Lot lived in. Sodom & Gomorrah. The latest daft interpretation of their "real" sin being inhospitability is just plain stupidity.

Assuming that, then God's original concept of humanity being made for relationship would naturally lead to Him creating a way to restore the relationship when we broke away after the Fall. That's where Jesus coming as a perfect, sinless sacrifice comes in.

I don't pray in the conventional, religious way its thought of. I don't kneel very often. I spend far more time listening than talking. But it's definitely a feeling of being in a conversation.

I've been a Christian nearly 36 years. In the beginning it was easy to get distracted when I tried to talk to God that way. Remember that the devil is described as the Accuser. In the beginning I'd talk to God and I'd start to convince myself very easily that I was imagining things when I started to "hear" a reply, or that it was mere coincidence when I'd find myself asking a question and reading a passage from the Bible that gave me an answer or from a Christian writer. Once I'd started to get past the early accusations and it was easier to hear replies, the sense of relationship deepened.

I'm not a Christian, but I have read the story of Sodom and Gomorrah a few times now, and I have to agree with the conventional interpretation of it, because it's rather obvious that, as you say, it isn't about being inhospitable. That much is clear.
There are many passages within the Bible that people either deliberately ignore, or deliberately misinterpret, because they cannot face the fact that back then the world was a very different place, with different rules, priorities and morals.

One of the biggest problems today is "situational morality". Most people - as you correctly say - ignore or misinterpret the Bible's cautionary stories.

I probably don't get everything right, but I'm doing better now than I did 35 years ago.

One thing to consider is the similarities between the 1st Century society under Roman rule and today's society.

I visited Pompeii & Herculaneum à few years ago and was fortunate to get chatting to one of the curators. He was fascinated by my story of my life and invited me to follow him. He took me to a house that wasn't being open to the public because it was in a bad state. He gave me a hard hat and took me in. The thing that had caught his attention was a lapel pin I had. The Icthys. The word in Greek literally means "fish". In Greek, the word forms an acronym making "Jesus Christ God's Son our Saviour". I'm sure you've seen it plastered around now but 2000 years ago it was a secret mark in houses the church met in.

In the wall of one house was a mosaic with an Icthys drawn into the plaster. A 2000 year old fingerprint was there in the plaster, protected by a 2cm thick piece of perspex. He allowed me to remove the perspex and trace the outline. The act of tracing the fish shape, connecting with an anonymous person who risked execution for professing the Faith we share was profound for me.

Roman society was even more "open" sexually than today. Brothels on every corner - literally - with mosaics or paintings on the walls of each room depicting what the girl's specialty was. Way more open than today.

The Bible teaches moral absolutes that haven't changed in 6000 years. I have yet to meet someone who doesn't struggle in several areas, and most people these days struggle with the sexual sin stuff. Me included.

The truly important rules, priorities & morals are the same now as they were in the days of Jesus, and the time of Abraham and Lot 4000 years before that.

By the way, and like I've said before, I'm not a Christian who believes in all of this, but I've read that story in Genesis countless times now, and it's pretty clear what's being condemned within it.

Again, you may have "heard" or "read" the story, but you clearly haven't ever really given much thought to it. Go "read" it again...

In the story God tells Lot he is going to destroy the city, but gives Lot time to enter the city to attempt to save his family members. All of this occurs before the mob coming to the house of Lot's cousin wishing to "know them."

Which means God had already decided to destroy the city, and in fact had condemned the city for its nature, BEFORE that occurrence. So, how can the story be condemning homosexuality, when the city was to be destroyed BEFORE anything that has to do with homosexuality occurred.

Again, very few people actually READ the bible, they skim it and listen to what other people say about it. Those other people they are listening to also have never READ the bible. The words used, and the placement in the sentence structure in the original Hebrew texts make a great deal of difference, and rarely get properly translated into English.

Furthermore, despite your claim you aren't a Christian and don't know that much, you speak on this topic with authority, at least in your mind. So why do you not already know the verse I'm talking about? Speaking of verses, here is a fun fact, they didn't originally exist in the bible. The were added in the middle ages, around 1400-1500 I believe.

Another fun fact, in Numbers, there exists a story about a priest inducing a miscarriage by using a ritual on a woman believed to have cheated on her husband, in a psuedo abortion. Shockingly, the Bible supports abortion in the event of a woman cheating.

The bible is a flawed book with countless contradictions, and you can make it say anything you want to with enough effort.

To be clear, I don't believe in God (anymore), but I used to.

From my perspective as a Christian, I had a very deep personal relationship with God because I talked to God A LOT. I walked a lot as a kid, because I lived in a rural area with towns 2-4 miles apart and I would just walk to the next town over to visit friends. I would almost always talk to God on my walks, just about "life, the universe and everything." I'd ask questions, ponder through stuff I didn't understand, tell God my feelings, hopes, dreams, fears, etc.

From my perspective as a non-believer/agnostic, I was just talking to myself. But I was, in a way, developing a deep intimate relationship with myself. I was learning about life by questioning it. I was learning about my psyche, by projecting it as an omnipotent being that had all the answers. I see now this is a major issue with religion, as it allows people to think that their own inner thoughts and psyche come from an omnipotent, omniscient being. That's trouble. But also, there is a lot of healthy mental work potential there, because you learn to be open, vulnerable, honest, and thoughtful.

Bottom line, at least from my perspective: having a "personal relationship with God." is just having a personal relationship with yourself.

And to answer your questions about why would the omnipotent being care about you, that's because for most people, God cares about them, God created them and loves them. For them, God makes them the center of His universe of love. Thats another reason why people are so in love with the idea of God and religion, it makes them feel loved and cared about in a BIG way. It's actually something I miss about being a Christian, but also I am happy I don't have that delusion anymore even though it was a very comforting and happy delusion.

But I have called you friends, because everything I have learned from My Father I have made known to you. You did not choose Me, but I chose you. He starts by saying that they are his friends. Then he gives you the reason. Friends have a personal connection with each other, they are open and bold with each other. This is demonstrated most profoundly when Jesus told his friends in John 6:66

He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. ... he said unto them, Doth this offend you? ... It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. ... no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. ... From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

This can be elucidated by Freudian psychology. Freud was one of the most popular psychologists of the 20th century. He believed your belief in god is influenced by your relationship with your biological father. Specifically, that god is the supernatural version of your father.

Freud admitted to getting most of his ideas from the bible. So it's no surprise that the bible actually concurs with Freud in John 4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar; for he that loveth not his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? Thus, a personal relationship with God is the same as having a clear understanding and appreciation of your father.

It's quite simple but extremely difficult. Jesus was asked which commandment was the most important. He named 2. Love God, and love your neighbour. Everybody focuses on "love God" and ignores the neighbour. But Jesus tied them together. "On these TWO commandments hang all the Law... " You cannot separate them. One without the other is meaningless. The Sermon on the Mount takes up 3 chapters of the Gospel of Matthew, and by far the strongest emphasis is on loving our neighbours, and our neighbours include our enemies. "Love your enemies and do good to those who hate you." He says that our sins will not be forgiven unless we forgive others. He also says not to bother praying to God if you have not reconciled with your brother. It goes on and on. I think the message is clear. Our relationship with God will look after itself IF we put our primary focus on each other.
There are no shortcuts. To say you love God but not the bugger next door, you are just plain wrong in Jesus' eyes. It is extremely difficult, but it is simple.
Can you imagine what kind of world we would be in today if 9-11 had led to peace and reconciliation instead of 20 years of war?

I guess it depends how you choose to perceive God. You might for example regards him as an unseen much loved grand father looking down on you and may be gently working to your betterment. You call it luck, but he knows what he did for you. And when you close your eyes and picture him, you get a warm feeling that you're not alone despite all the untrustworthy humans around you. And who's to say an entity that powerful is not capable of concurrently having a personal relationship with each of us, and each relationship being tailored. Believe what you want to believe, assuming it helps you.

Here is the thing, a relationship goes both ways. You can't have a relationship with someone who doesn't interact with you.. otherwise it is completely one sided and therefor, not a relationship. And Muslims don’t believe the Quran was written by God, we believe the Quran was revealed by God to the Prophet Muhammad. And that’s not an absurd claim to make, when you study the history, how the Quran was preserved etc, the Quran itself, the life of the Prophet Muhammad- that’s just my and many others experience with Islam, and I’m not going to claim to know it all about Islam, because I don’t, I’m still studying and still learning- but the more I study the stronger my faith becomes.

As for your question as to why God would want a relationship with the Creation- the answer is simple, because He is Most Merciful. Having a relationship with God, is something beneficial to us human beings, God doesn’t need us to worship Him, we need to worship God in order to live our best lives. God is so Merciful that He wants us to reap the benefits of having a connection, a relationship, to him in this life and the next.
