What do I do if I'm Catholic and my child comes out as gay?

If I were a mother I would love my child no matter what. If the child were to become gay I wouldn't be able to support them, but I wouldn't want to kick them out either. What would be the best to do in a situation like that when you're Catholic?

One of the most important things you can do is arm yourself with the truth and do so now, while you are currently not facing this situation. One place you can start with is then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI) and his 1986 letter on pastoral care for people who experience same-sex attraction.

You would also do well to review what the Catechism of the Catholic Church says on the matter in paragraphs 2357 to 2359.

Firstly, most kids say that shit for attention, or because they think it's quirky. So it's important not to just jump down their throat at the mere mention of them "coming out".

Talk them through their thinking of why and what's going on in their lives. To be honest, your kid "coming out" in the blue is more an indication of how poor a parent you've been to have missed the flags.

It's as daft as dimwits who get rejected when they propose to their "love" and act all surprised afterwards. It is up to you, not them, to know the score before committing.

Anyway, once all that is out the way, you need to decide based on their assertion if they are just being difficult and rebellious, or if they actually are. This is why there is no one guide on what you "should" do , as every case is different. A lot of people just assume you "must" accept someone as gay. But they fail to realise it's not a straight forward matter.

You love and support them no matter what. They are still your kid, this who they have been the whole time nothing has changed about them, nobody just 'becomes' gay/bi/pans/trans/NB. Its not a choice any more than eye color or skintone is. Think about how you would feel if your mother stopped supporting and loving you because of something out of your control. Why would you want to make your own child feel that way? No person in their right mind would choose their beliefs over their childs happiness and wellbeing.

Catholics preach love the sinner, not the sin. And that no one can judge another, only god. So you'd shut up about your kids lifestyle, love them as much as you always did, and let God deal with it when life's over.
