the original purpose of hijab is to differentiate the free Muslim women from the slave women. Quran 33:59:
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ قُل لِّأَزْوَٰجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَآءِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِن جَلَٰبِيبِهِنَّ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰٓ أَن يُعْرَفْنَ فَلَا يُؤْذَيْنَ ۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمًا
O Prophet! say to your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers that they let down upon them their over-garments (Arabic: Jilbab); this will be more proper, so that they may be recognized (as free Women) and not annoyed/molested.
Tafsir Ibn Kathir:
... (In this verse, Allah ordered the free women) to draw their Jilbabs over their bodies, so that they will be distinct in their appearance from the women of the Jahiliyyah and from slave women...
And As-Suddi said about the revelation of this verse 33:59 that the mischief-mongers among the people of Madīnah would come out on the streets at dusk and get after the women. The houses of the people of Madīnah [in those days] were very small in size and at nightfall the women would go out on these streets [making their way to the fields] to relieve themselves. These evil people would tease and molest these women. While if they saw a woman who would be wearing a Jilbab (cloak/outer garment), they would say she is a free woman [and not a slave] and would abstain [from molesting her] and if they saw a woman who would not be wearing a cloak, they would molest her by saying that she is a slave woman.
And Mujahid said that those women would wear cloaks [in the way prescribed by the Qur'ān] so that it be known that they are free women and the mischief-mongers would not then harm or molest them.

I really like the abayas and stuff and think they look super feminine and classy/regal. I started wearing them with half head covered and noticed a significant difference. Men respect me so much. They call me sister, they lower they gaze when they speak to me, they talk to me like I am an angel. I think just a headscarf makes no difference but when you actually wear a loose flowy garment then men really really respect you a lot more. They’re more likely to view you as marriageable and I find it much more beautiful than getting attention for being beautiful and having a hot body while being uncovered - not that I ever dressed immodest. I was always a modest dresser but this has completely transformed people’s behaviour towards me. I do get the odd comments from Europeans - not even British White people who say stupid things. But this is my body, my life. I want to cover myself up because I believe my beauty is for my husband only and it saved me from becoming a prisoner to society which can eat up a woman’s brains.

I believe it does, but only if it is done properly. And by 'done properly' I mean that the rest of the outfit isn't contradicting to the purpose of the hijab. I've seen women wearing a hijab with yogapants and even a print of their thong. Others even had their cleavage out, no kidding. That defeats the entire purpose of the hijab. While at the same time I've seen women wearing hijab who dress modestly, not showing too much 'curve'. There is a major difference between both groups.

Yes, obscuring view of body certainly helps since seeing is a trigger for desire. I believe the whole point of covering her up is "honor"... protecting the mans sense of honor in that culture.

Why should a woman have to cover herself from head to toe just to prevent herself from getting raped? Why shouldn't men learn to curb their own sexual impulses rather than to rape every woman they find attractive?

Hijab doesn't work. Take a look at countries in middle east , rape is common and fairly an everyday thing. Rape cases there are significantly higher than in america. It all has to so with the attitudes of men towards women. Hijab means nothing and does nothing. Men who are in favor of nijab tend to be sexist and patriarchal

I think you'd have to be a muslimist to fully understand their stuff and behavior. Normal people can't grasp what they are doing running around dressed up like Halloween in 97 degrees. But hey, whatever they want right? I personally think they should do it in their own country thou. You're confused.

The word "hijab" has many different meanings, only one of which is "scarf". It also means "modesty".

Thus "dressing modesty" means to be "in hijab" in some dialects.

You're also not the brightest, if you think dressing provocatively or immodestly doesn't count against you in a court of law. Or that it matter what you as a "straight" anything think on the matter. It's about social norms in groups and communities.

You wouldn't bitch about someone wearing a bikini, why bitch about someone in hijab or burkha, if not to expose your own bias and insecurities?

The hijab is supposed to be ‘modest’ but it goes beyond that so please make sure you don’t spread incorrect information. The hijab is supposed to enhance the connection muslim women have with God because dressing in that way is a constant symbol and reminder of God. Please also note that modesty applies to men in other forms in Islam too (although not often talked about).

Its anyones right to practice what they want but I personally don't think it does much for the general population of muslim women, looking at sex crimes muslim countries are about on average with most other places but something with Muslim countries to consider is a lot of sexual assault goes unreported and a lot of victims are actually punished due to it being considered "zina" which is so messed up in most cases.

A muslim friend of mine from Iran told me the real reason to wear a hijab is for the woman to show modesty. To not show off her beauty in order to be seen in a different way, but to instead rely on her personality.
