Why do all civilizations sacrifice themselves to worship a higher power?

Millions if not billions of slaves and possible volunteers have died building monuments and gravestones and temples for different Gods that people worship and this has been true all through history.

I asked my cultural anthropology professor a very similar question and this is what she said. Cultures developed gods in order to enforce cultural norms (such as how many people one person can marry), provide stability, help find purpose in life, and make sense of the complicated world around us. While many of us wonder why we need something like gods or religion because they don't do much for us personally, it is very important to some cultures and thats why they sacrifice their time to worship their personal god/gods.
